The first person I saw doing it was Soulsonic, and that was back in 2008 I think. And I believe that a lot of the Mid-Fi finishes are done this way.

stamps FTW! i've been stamping shit since the first TAFMs back from around the same era (2008-ish?).
i did get some full enclosure sized stamps made (one and DONE!) that were great. they're not terribly expensive (full enclosure size was somewhere between $20-40), the ink is cheap and VERY durable (you really don't even need to clear over it) and quick drying to handling time. the only thing is getting it even if you need everything to be aligned well - maybe making a jig of some kind would help as it can be tough to eyeball it.

I reckon you could build a rectangular jig that perfectly fits the enclosure and stamp (maybe with 2 steps to account for different sizes of stamp and enclosure), like a picture frame, and then just slide it up and down in there.

But there are at least half a dozen that I've seen.

Basically, do you your own artwork and upload it to their server. Then they use that as a pattern to cut the rubber on the stamp blank. Pretty awesome.

Staz On works really well, and is made for all surfaces. I use the purple and black with letter stamps sometimes, and I use a "handmade by:" stamp on the inside of all my boxes. Like Brian said, you don't even need to clear coat it.

Yep, you definitely don't have to clear over the Staz On. I just noticed that once it dries, it sort of turns into rubber, and it *is* possible to use friction to peel it off. Clear coat makes this much harder. But for general, non-Jack Ass usage, it's not strictly necessary.

This may or may not become an official product of Black Arts Toneworks. I think Mark wants to dabble in a few short run "custom shop" type pedals, and this one is going to be the pilot. Probably. We're going with "Fnord! Fuzz" as the name, since he and I are both big fans of the Illuminatus Trilogy.

I pitched the idea to him several months back, and he was all like "Go for it! If people want it, I'll build some." And just to be totally clear, I'm not an employee of Black Arts, just an enthusiastic collaborator.

This one is a total departure, sonically speaking, from the other stuff in the Black Arts lineup. A little bit more "noise" than his other stuff. I thought you guys would appreciate it more than any other group.

If it ends up going into a short run production, the final enclosure will have cool silkscreened graphics. It will likely look nothing like the unit pictured below.

Right, I am willing and interested in doing some short run stuff that won't go to dealers, but more available to those of us who hang in the forums. Nothing "official", but more "custom shop" is I guess the correct description.

As CJ says, I liked the idea he had for this, not to mention other ideas he has. And if there is any kind of demand for this one, I'd be happy to do a short run of these, only available through the forums which CJ or I use.
