Layered Big Muff Fuzz tones

Post by stilwel »

So I got all fired up about recording some multi-layered Big Muff tones this morning for some reason. I started playing "Today" by Smashing Pumpkins and just kind of took off from there.

A single Big Muff track by itself can sound thin and buzzy, but you layer 3 of them (L/R/C) and things thicken up quite a bit. I added the outro melody (3-part harmony) for something different.

Gear used:
Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster
Line 6 M9 (big muff)
Strymon Timeline (delay on the melody guitars)
POD HD Bean (JCM800 model and room reverb)

Enjoy,

With the M9, can you have 3 Muffs going at once, set to the different positions you describe?

Sounds more like he recorded multiple guitar tracks.

Yeah, three separate tracks.

You can have 3 Big Muffs going at once on the M9, but they would all be in series....snowfest.

The POD HD Bean could do two separate signal paths with a Big Muff and a JCM800 model in each split L/R stereo. MIght have to try that at some point.
Easy way to record two tracks at the same time, with slightly different tones on each side.

I like the fullness you get by actually recording a few separate tracks.

Yus you do.
And I think I need to get a twosome. Do our paths meet? Who knows...

Well no offense, but it could be a M9 thing...

because i haven't experienced single Muff track being thin or buzzy :idk:

but layering ftw, certainly... especially when you can record with more guitars :) and more dirt boxes... i usually layer at least two with at least two guitars... good panning and pickup selection and you end up with supercool sound

layering is a Good Thing. Especially with fuzz bass. Bass->Shiva->SS amp, double tracked, panned hard left & right, with a clean bass part in the middle, was awesome.

I miss my shiva. v.v
