Thanks for the offer, Devi. I like the idea of buying from a trusted seller, but despite their monolithic icon status...I'm just not attracted to Strats.
That Jagmaster (stupid name) with the SD humbuckers looks intriguing though.
OK, so I went to Shitar Center today to kick tires. I played everything under a grand. I left with the conclusion that I should pool more money first and spend a little more. The really cheap stuff just felt...cheap. My favorite thing was a "Crafted in Japan" Jaguar - with humbuckers and a Les Paul style bridge/tail. Best of both worlds...and felt much nicer than the MIM's and rivaled the MIA's (IMHO).
yeh man i have no beefs with the crafted in japan series. i've got a CIJ tele that i play every week. they are definitely on part with the MIA and for significantly less $$. if you can find a cherry one you're going to walk away with a much better deal than the equivalent MIA.
They come with gfs pickups, which I've heard good things about, and they look like they're pretty good quality, but they're ridiculously cheap...they have tele copies starting at $159 and les pauls for around $200.

I have one. I have the XV-700 thinline. It's great bang for the buck. I have last year's model, so my pups aren't as good. It's very light, well crafted, and has great sustain. Don't get me wrong, it's not a $1000 guitar, but it's still great.

How are the newer pups? I've heard of gfs before but I've never really looked into how they sound
The Fat PATs in my older one were good. I've heard that people like the pups in the 820s. You're making me want one. They're generally well setup. There's always a few finish problems, but hey, it's a $200 guitar.

Replaced the middle pick up with a high gain Seymour Duncan humbucker wired out of phase with the stock single coils, and added a kill switch for good measure.
Middle pickup hangs out a bit, but can be fixed with a new spring on the screw.
Definitely battle worn a bit, but nothing horrible. Sounds great, stays in tune, and was once owned by ME!
I'm a big fan of all the Line 6 modelers (except the distortion) to have them all in pedal would be I'll take you up on the Strat offer if it's still up
