This thread is a perfect argument for totally ignoring mainstream pop culture :picard:

Also why one shouldn't use a cartoon as a basis for a argument about religion :picard:

Or social consciousness :picard:

SP peaked with Crab People to me :picard:

Although I must say I agree for the most part with Roseweave about Trey's blockheadedness at times, but then it it still just a American mainstream cartoon, it's not like it is Anime or something actually worth paying much attention to :animal:

I heard God watches south park and laughs his ass off.

But really I like south park, I'm sad I came into this thread during a religious argument. :(

I have a raging clue.

Now you're gonna argue that "the big bang/crunch isn't the accepted model." Then I'll argue "Nobody said it was. Neither is creation/divine apocalypse, but it still falls under the 'people believe it, but we don't really know' catagory." Then you'll give me some kind of shit about just sticking up for them or something...

But he did act like the Big Crunch was the currently accepted model, and most informed "atheists" don't believe it. He was talking out of his ass and you're going to crazy lengths to defend him. He made an assumption that most atheists believe in the big crunch, it isn't true, it's just a mainstream misconception, like his representation of a transsexual.

Nobody is looking at the south park guys as scholars

But you're still defended their integrity to create characters like Mrs. Garrison. They have no idea what they're talking about most of the time. I have a lot more evidence than you do at the end of the day.

Yes, stereotypes are funny. The show uses stereotypical views on pretty much everything in our society for comedic value, at the expense of the group being stereotyped. Just because you personally take offense to the transsexual thing does not mean it's any worse than say, stereotyping Jewish people, rednecks, Muslims, Black people, Gays, Straights, etc. It's not liked he's only uninformed on the subject of transsexuals.

Now come on Skeeter, they ain't hurtin' anybody. :idk:

No, he's uninformed on a lot of things, it's just that at least for all of those other things there is some level of information in the mainstream, most people deal with those in their ever day lives directly or indirectly; this is not the case for transsexuals who are a much smaller minority. South Park is not going to be someone's first frame of referece for muslims or gay people. It's kicking someone when they're down, and it's sad. Of course they're hurting someone when they're showing a negatie image of a minority most people don't know anything about.

Nobody is "turning" to South Park for their info on transsexuals. But if someone has barely or never heard of a transsexual before and sees that, it will be their frame of reference. I don't understand your difficulty with this.

The problem comes in drawing the line...when is it ok to make fun of something? It goes back to much of the debate over the "cartoon wars" episode with muhammad.
*side note south park HAS shown a depiction of muhmmad before, check out the episode "super best friends"

What qualities must a minority possess to put a safeguard on them that says "no not them, it isn't fair"?
What litmus test must a published work pass to insure it is giving a fair and balanced opinion? Surely south park would fail all accounts.

You could argue Trey Parker has some responsibility as a figure who is well respected amongst younger crowds, but pulling punches has never been his strong point
I'm not sure what kind of alternative we're reaching for here. The show has always based it's humor on tearing down strawmen, it's sorta what makes the show so ridiculous.

I understand what you're saying, but I think your anger is wrongly directed at South Park. Direct your hate at those to gullible to see through the show and come to the conclusion that is what transsexuals are really like. Most people realize that the show bases it's humor on stereotypes. So be mad at stereotypes. I've never met a transsexual individual in person, but I can see through their media portrayal and assume they aren't all like that. :idk:
