But I don't necessarily have the money for a 60s Fender Bass VI. What are my options? A used Gretsch ? Figure out how to install one on a Schecter Hellcat? Any ideas ILF?
Agile Argus? They are pretty sweet from what I hear.
Schecter is re-releasing the hellcat at NAMM I think, the new one looks pretty awesome...but yeah, hardtail. Might not be hard to bigsby it, not sure what kinda trem you want.
One of my bandmates had one of those, said that the thing practically pulled itself apart.
I think the dead-ons must be kindof hit or miss, because I've had one for a while now and it has held up pretty well. Will say that the trem didn't do a whole lot, just a light warble.
Japanese VI reissues are rare but usually more affordable than vintage. Custom Shop isn't a different enough proposition from vintage to be all that helpful.
The usual Rondo/Eastwood/similar vintage type workarounds may be sufficient. Then there's Gretsch's bari Electromatic and slapping a Bigsby on various fixed-bridge baris. If you can find the Japanese bari Jag, adding a Bigsby or a Fender trem tailpiece might be an option.

I think there might be some confusion. I think the op is asking about a true bass VI and not a baritone. I believe fender america is going to import the japanese bass VI reissues this year. Also I will be introducing some bass VI instruments in late spring. Not sure if I can bigsby them though. I will certainly look into it!!!

My whole life is a shitpost. One. Big. Shit. Post.
hm. Ideally I'd like the scale length to be 30', so I'm leaning away from bari guitars. I am primarily a gazey bassist so the lows and the drones are very important. This definitely must feel "bass" at least in the lower two strings, the instrument itself is for exploring droney tunings so the top 4 will be changing pretty consistently.
I do wonder if building an instrument is better/cheaper than obtaining a Bass VI or suitable bari sans tremolo and adding it. Ultimately the type of trem doesn't really matter to me so much. Bigsby'd Hellcat could be badass...
Hm... If I did decide to go down the 'build one' path, though, I suppose my main concern is electronics. Specifically my lack of knowledge of electronics. What sorts of pickups for Bass Vi's - historically they've just been guitar pickups, right? Could this be improved upon/Suggestions for godly roaring bassy bari pickups?
