On the hunt for a synth/drone machine...

Post by Wes Mantooth »

So lately I've decided to split up my board (more like just buy more pedals :p )and have one for guitar and another for a droning synth and eventually a drum machine.

So for my synth board I plan to use my Snazzy FX Mini Ark for pitch shifting and general craziness along with a WMD Super Fatman or a Snazzy FX Tracer City if I save enough for filtering. I'll probably also get a fuzz and a reverb or delay for it as well. Any other suggestions for the synth board? It'll mainly be used to create drones for me to play over with guitar.

I also need suggestions on a synth, lately I've been looking at Skychord's offerings and think they seem pretty cool but I want to see what else is out there. Any other ideas?
Also if you'd be interested in building me something like a 4-5 oscillator synth let me know and we could work something out :thumb:

Running a Trogotronic noisemaker synth into a SOMMS has crossed my mind and would be pretty cool

I have been drawn to the Drone Commander for quite some time though it is a bit more expensive than I'd like. I'll probably just spring for one anyway since it has cool features with the filter and LFO. Then since I wouldn't much need a separate filter I'd just have a board with a Mini Ark, some sort of delay and maybe a fuzz.

Anyone know the current requirements for powering the DC? Would 150ma do the trick?

That is really cool, no idea the Teaser Stallion could do that!

Also the Slicer is another pedal I may need to look in to.

Yep, that's pretty much all I use it for. Almost never as an actual guitar distortion, though it sounds good doing that too.

Well Prymaxe is having a sale on just about everything for 15% off and I dropped a Skychord Sleepdrone 6 in my cart, it'll cost $272.

Still I'm strangely more drawn to the Drone Commander for it's filtering options...

Such a tough decision! If I do end up going DC, I'll probably purchase some other pedal at Prymaxe to go on my synth board like a Dwarfcraft Mangler or something.

What should I do ILF?

Have you thought about using a Feedback Looper and creating your own synth?
Here is a demo I did for the Basic Audio tourbox.
It's just an example of some sounds you can get using only fuzz (cheaper pedals work well too) in a feedback loop without even using an input instrument.
I kept this to just fuzz and verb but adding modulation and delay or what ever else you want could make it more awesomer.

You could also record drones with guitar or sound samples or whatever else and play them back through a pedal chain for further tweaking.

I just think most synths/noise makers are a little pricey for what they do and I get bored with them fairly fast. :idk:
