Re: Sunn model T amp
1-The reissues are poop when compared to an original but if it was called a model T-otally different then as a newer dependable touring amp w 6L6's I'd say maybe? (they seem to work for Kid Rock :vomiting emoticon:)
2-The Sunn 300's are crappppp there was a touring friend who had gotten one at the recommendation of a heavy duty touring friend and even after the fender servicing where the entire board was replaced it still lit up tubes like super nova.
3-sound city = winning
4-Parker's a cool cat from way back

I'd say $1300 is pretty reasonable for the SS if the 2x12 is included. Pretty neat little rig with a huge sound

Re: Sunn model T amp
I have one (for sale as well) . It's a pretty alright amp. People get way hung up on the fact that it is a fender reissue, and stick to the "its such a crap amp cause it isn't a real sunn" modus operandi. I'm only looking to get rid of it for 2 reasons: 1) because i want another verellen. and 2) it had a hell of a time cutting with my other guitarist's 5150 live, no matter how loud i was, i was always drowned out.
People that play a reissue (that came immediately to mind):
Russian circles guitarist runs one into another.
Rosetta's guitarist runs his into a JCM900
Spitfire's guitarist used one too.
I used it, in part, on every gholas recording (links in the profile.)
IF you are trying to compare it to the original Model T, then people are correct, they are nowhere near the same amp. However, this does not at all mean that this is a shitty amp. It is actually a very good amp.

I have a reissue and don't think its a shitty amp at all.
I am only considering dumping mine when I need to get the final chunk of change to get a handwired ac30

Yeah it's rad. Takes pedals like Sasha Grey takes dicks (the more the merrier) and sounds awesome. My main complaint is like was stated before, once the volume on the clean channel goes to 4 all you do is add gain not volume

Dunno, but volume on 4 even theoratically sounds very loud, like perfectly gigable loud and maybe even more. Ain't that so?
i haven't gigged with more than 4 and i play through a 112 combo, 30W A class
we might differ in opinions on loudness though

4 is good enough in smaller rooms and clubs. But if the club can hold 80+ people even with 2 4x12's it can get drowned out very easily. Especially when your bassist plays through 2 Sunn 300 watt solid state heads powering a 4x15 and a 2x15 and your drummer plays like he's beating his wife for cheating on him. As deathmonkey said it just doesnt cut through in a mix and if you crank the presence and mids it gets fizzy real quick. Its more of a indie, alt, etc head than the doom bringing monster it borrows its name from.

yeah, i usually keep it on the 12.5 watt setting, and its totally usable for volume, but I'm just saying, turning it up past four doesn't bring any more volume, well, closer to 3 on my amp. I guess I could throw some 12AT7s in or something to lower the gain, but it works for me. and my music is way closer to the indie/alt than doom so

Re: Sunn model T amp
I tried some lower gain tubes for the clean channel and it helped a bit, the biggest difference was power tubes. From what i was able to dig up online its the power amp section that has the design flaw that causes the breakup or gain above 4, IIRC it was really poor phase inverter design (the awesomeness of the original Model T lied in its ultra linear phase inverter feeding 6550's). It also is why the distortion channel is only half as loud as the clean channel (on mine the gain channel maxxed out was barely louder than the clean at 4, but the feedback was totally unbearable). I also never used the 25 watt setting only the 120. I play teh doomz and as much as i liked the tone of the clean channel for recording i needed something with more volume and a ton of headroom, so i went out and got an all tube 200 watt single channel head. Problem solved.

yeah big difference in the clean and gain channels in terms of volume, but meh, still sounds good for what I'm doing.

Re: Sunn model T amp
I used a Model T reissue for about 3 years. The clean was very harsh sounding and way too distorted with the stock 6L6's. Thankfully, I have access to an awesome tech and he switched those out to 6550's to increase the headroom and decrease the breakup of the amp on the clean channel. Worked like a charm, made it a lot louder, but the conversion was not cheap or easy. The distortion channel sounded great on the one I had. I played it through a Marshall 1960AV cab and I used to think that was the rat's tits. I ended up selling it to a friend, who still has it to my knowledge.
Some of the questions I saw in this thread...
Q: Is it loud?
A: I would say no, based on the setup I am used to playing through, as well as in comparison to the vintage Model T. It's louder than a Marshall JCM 2000, if that helps.
Q: Does it take pedals well?
A: The stock clean channel is way too distorted and lacks headroom, so overall I would say no. If you can find someone to convert it to 6L6's and are willing to pay several hundred dollars for that, then yes. This amp really prefers that you run all effects through the effects loop, but that sounded worse to my ears, ironically.
Didn't Russian Circles used to swear by these amps?

Re: Sunn model T amp
He used one into the other, they have an auxillary amp send and return.
then i believe used an OCD to drive them.
I always liked it with a muff variant in front. I had way better sounds with the musket fuzz into the clean channel.
