Moogerfoogers

Post by JT23 »

So I already have the MF-102 Ring Modulator & just nabbed the Phaser (MF-103); however, I'm calling in a favor and have been offered some great discounts on another Moogerfooger.

Plus, FYI, y'all should be all over this one, Moogerfooger's end of the year $50 rebate deal: http://www.moogmusic.com/news/moogerfoo ... es-history

Anyway, I've basically narrowed it down to the following (cheapest to priciest)

MF-101 Lowpass Filter
MF-1O7 FreqBox
MF-105 Murf
MF-108 Cluster Flux

Obviously, if cost & availability were not an issue, we'd probably all go for the Analog Delay. Personally, I've found all Moog gear to be amazing so may just go with best deal. But I wanna hear from all you Fuzzheads, which one is better & why. You've got until 12/30/11. Thanks, John

Oh yeah, it goes without saying I love fuzzy, squelchy, burbly sounds out of my guit. Gotta couple different basic setups I'm always tweaking. [/b

[b]Blue Guitars: lee ranaldo JM, thinskin '62 Jag, competition mustang with stripe, some sparkly danelectro with built in effects, & that new marauder
Black Guitars: nice epi sg; busted epi lp; & the bloody squire i learned on

Blue Amps: kramer, kramer, kramer, more sparkles
Black Amps: sunn combo, sunn stack, & fender super 6

Too many effects for a guy about to be checked in the hospital...

Tunage (oh, you know the drill): mbv, sy, dino jr, j&mc, pixies, nirvana, that one pumpkin album before they sucked, nuggets, stooges, mc5, majesty crush, kfa, shoegaze, shitgaze, the new wave of new wave, riot grrl, fugazi, pavement, shellac, and some kid in the bowels of america plugging a shitty ibanez into an even shittier peavey and screaming til he's hoarse & his mom tells him its time for dinner, and the clash, of course.

Hmmmmm the only other one I have real life experience with is the Murf. a buddy uses one in a kinda southwest psychedelic / shoegaze band and when mixed in tastefully it is a very versatile pedal. most demos only show the extreme uses of it. (which are also cool) sorry my ADD is kicking in but I wonder what a murf sounds like in a feedback loop. since you can control the bands I bet you could get it to be a stepped tone generator of sorts. Hmmm

so I guess my vote is murf? :idk:

oh and welcome :)

I am a Bass Player so I would say the MF-101. I have had a Bass Murf Briefly, it was really cool. If this is the Midi-Murf it is super tweakable...Really any of them is going to be cool with two others to hook up to.

the only one i've had is the freqbox...moog oscillator in a box. thats really all u need to know about it....i actually never used it on guitar/bass. only on keyboards and feedback loops....sounds amazing in those contexts...wish it had an LFO in addition to the envelope, but putting it in my utter stutter loop helped that out. i remember making a lot of lazer sounds/ birds chirping/ kind of sound types. u could make it like a wah w/ an expression pedal or a pitch shifter.

i dunno what im saying, this isn't necessarily an endorsement for the freqbox, but it is a good pedal.....w/ the MF's i dont think u can go wrong with any of them. i think if i were to buy any of those u mentioned today, it would be a murf or the cluster flux....obv the analog delay too, but i dont need to spend $700 on a delay.....or do i?

I've tried the first 3. The Freqbox and the LPF are both awesome as shit. The Freqbox can make some fucking WILD sounds, especially when you sweep the freq with an exp pedal and mix in some FM. The LPF is cool for doing those huge Geddy Lee filter sweeps (again, get an expression pedal). The Murf is cool, but I actually think the Boss Slicer kills it for doing a similar effect. Haven't gotten a chance to try the Cluster Flux yet.

The MF-101 is absolutely essential I'd say - it's just a really really good filter and can be used for all different kinds of playing. Great stuff there. A real swiss army knife.

It sorta depends on your taste though and what you're looking to do. If you want to make crazy synth noises with your guitar, then the Freqbox is your jam. The oscillator out on the Freqbox would let you do some cool stuff with the carrier input on the Ring Mod too.

If you love chorus and flange and vibe, the Cluster Flux is really nice, but not as essential to me. It sounds good as hell and is crazy crazy tweakable, but not key to my music I don't think. Love it for sure, but would get the 101 or the 107 first personally.

And the MuRF is a ton of fun, but again, just a really specific sound and function. Though, as mentioned, there a way more subtle sounds available in it than what you hear in most demos. Depending on the envelope shape you can get these really amazing kind of abstract vocal sounds out of it. To me it's a very unique offering and sounds fantastic, just maybe wouldn't be my first pick of the ones you have listed.

And thanks for the head's up on that rebate! Happy Moog'ing!

There's a pretty decently priced FreqBox in the B/S/T right now, fyi.

Can we just turn this into a Moogerfooger thread? I just got some and I'd like to share my thoughts about them.

First up: Bass Murf.

Was a bit hesitant to try this one out, all the online demos I had seen only showed the extreme uses of the pedal. But after doing some reading and experimenting of my own, I've come to love this pedal. Without engaging the sequencer, you've pretty much got a fancy EQ pedal. But there is a nice little secret hidden in this pedal. When you turn the drive to max with the sequencer off, you've got a killer graphic overdrive. It's insane the amount of variations you can get out of the EQ section mixed with the drive.

Also, in experimentation, I stumbled across some more subtle phaser-esque sounds that are really neat. Really rich and sweepy, and can be mixed as subtle or as obvious as you want with the mix knob.

Next up: Ring Mod

I know a few dudes on here are rocking the Moog Ring Mod. I'd never used a ring mod before I picked the Moog up. At first I was a little put off by the sounds that were coming out of it, nothing super practical, but through sitting down with it I found a few cool things. It makes a really awesome tremolo. It can do standard sweeps, yeah, but it can also do sputtery and inconsistent sweeps by increasing the frequency that your guitar's signal is fighting against. It's a really neat sound that I haven't heard before, and sounds different than space-shippy sounds.

Another cool thing you can do with the ring mod is patch it in to itself and make a sweet analog oscillator. Patch the carrier output into the input, and then the LFO output into the pitch CV in. It can go from deep and fat to squeaky and thin, with the ability of making a square wave oscillator or a triangle wave oscillator which is really neat.

I'll be getting the low pass filter in next week and I'll post my thoughts about that as well. Two additional power supplies are en-route so when they come I can start using all of the Moogerfoogers as a modular. I'll post patches and experimentation research.
