NAD: Mesa Boogie Lonestar Special

Post by fetch »

Nothing really spesh' but I've been after this amp for a while. Fucking speculator amp in the 1x12 format. Already pimping it out with Mercury (Fatstack) transformers as it's a necessity anyway as well as a Celestion Gold. I'll also eventually replace the Tole and I don't think I could deal with the poo-brown for too much longer. I'm thinking something stupid and obnoxious like paisley or a bunch of penises, balls and vaginas all different in colours.

But yup. It'll be my #1 for the foreseeable future with the Matamp as my low-watt amp and the Yami-twins handle loud stereo.

WINNING!

Disclaimer: I have shit power and I'm using a step-down which isn't running through my Belkin power-unit so it's all hissy/noisy still. Interested to see what it sounds like after the new transformer/speaker.

The amp is 30/15/5 switichable. EL-84 tubes. Two channels with independent EQ, independent reverb, FX loop, etc.

Clean channel is awesome. It kind of reminds me a lot of modern amps like the Bandmaster. Big, round, clear tonez and very chimey. Lots of headroom and sounds wonderful with pedals. It's really warm / almost too warm. It doesn't sound very great with my Epi Dot humbuckers. I never liked the bridge anyway and the neck sounds muffled.

I haven't played the OD channel as much but it sounds like OD to me :idk: I like OD-pedals as I hate standing near the amp as that's not the sounds I hear when I move away and that way I can EQ at the right distance/etc. Kinda why I bought it so I don't have to cart my Kingsley Jester pre-amp everywhere and just use the amps OD + an OD3 for boost or something.

I friend of mine has that in a head instead of the combo. He's using a 2x12 Celestion G12T-75 with a closed back. It does not sound the the $$$ he paid for it.

I'm trying to get him to get better speakers and an open back. Is the combo open back?

This is definitely an open-back type amp! Tell him to whip out the chainsaw and make his cabinet 1/2 or 3/4

Yeah the Combo is open back. It comes with the Celestion Black Shadow which I'll be replacing with a Celestion Gold. I've heard if you're doing a 2x12 that the Geenbacks work really well too (or were they the 30watt Heritages? I read it somewhere!).

Here's a pic from the site of the back:

I am a huge fan of those lone stars, even they look like poop! :poke:

I was about to pull the trigger on a used Lone Star Special when I found a used THD Bivalve for like $450! :yay: :!!!: :yay:

I'd still like to get one down the road! Love low wattage combos!
