FUZZ: Single coils or humbucker

Post by V0id »

I'm currently using single coils (mustang CIJ default and SD hot for jaguar) and they give a pretty nice tone. It's quite different in my p90's more crunchy but still defined sound. I would like to know the differences between pickups when you're using your fuzzes.
Have you compared sounds with similar guitars and diferent pickups? Anyone with humbuckers? What have you got to say?

PD: The TBD is much more affected by the pickups, since the sound and specially the decay, is totally different from one to another. I love the decay it's got when i play my mustang but the fuzz sound is better when it's pluged into a hot jaguar.

I generally like and use single coils...the tbd and rocket love my jag (vintage piece, original pups),i would be bummed if i had anything else...maybe i'm just spoiled, but it's my only guitar.I like single coils on clean too.Humbuckers are definitely not for me...maybe mini hums, like the ones you can find on certain les pauls and firebirds...but i just don't like humbuckers...single coils have more treble and dynamics, with or without fuzz,at least, that's my experience.Humbuckers sound bigger in some way,but dull too...i can't explain it really...i guess i'm a single coil person.

I rock the humbuckers (semihollow Epiphone Sheraton) + Mellowtone Wolfie. It's a thick, messy empire of fuzz.

IMO single coils have a little more definition and subltety with fuzz but not quite the same uplifting bigness.
ILF pedals: DE Eye of God, Mellowtone Wolf Computer, Mellowtone Singing Tree LE, Fuzzhugger Arc Flash Oscillator, DSc Miniberator, Mysterious J boost/cut/tremolo pedal

my strat has SCNs
my semi hollow has mid level, i think close to high end, epi pups
its hard to explain the tones yo

strat is more open and has more clarity, more transparent
semi has thick, THICK tonez, perfect for leads yo

Seems like a déjà vu thread.

I'll say both are useful for different jobs.
Singles are great for bright, clangy, trashy, punky.
Hums can get your muffs thick and creamy like a milkshake. Hums to me sound like capital 'R' ROCK!

I like my Telecaster a lot. It has a trashy bridge pick up, and the middle pick up gives a nice punch, smooths out fuzz, but still a bit trashy, then the neck pick up is creamy smooth.

Humbuckers are a bit too limited for me but they really drive a punk song like no other when you need to say something loud.

That's pretty much it.

With most of me fuzz pedals, I be hearing muddyness with humbuckers off the port bow, argh. Single coil Strat is ftw, brings tears to an old sea dogs eyes. :bob:

I generally use singles, but humbuckers + Sm is so lush. I could strum an E chord on my Epi Dot Studio through and let that thing ring through me for an hour.

I've found the The TP side of my SG makes everything sound like the Tp regardless of which pup I use. :stitch:

I've tried 'em all. I've got a jag with humbuckers, and a Wide Ranger in a telecaster. But the best of the best has always been my single coils in the telecaster. So much so, that Ive been considering flipping some gear with humbuckers.

Single coils - works better for me - humbuckers tend to tame fuzzes, too much sustain...

i love my telecaster with maple frets in the "middle" pickup position. that for live shows i love humbuckers. something about that extra oomph.

For me I just prefer Humbuckers in general. I could get a good Silversun Pickups-style tone with my Epi Dot and a Big Muff.

That said, I've been messing around with my new toys (A Rocket and White Spider) as well as my Big muffs and My Jazzmaster and can get a reasonable approximation of "Mary Star of the Sea" by Zwan, i.e. this bit here:

People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey... stuff.
