I <3 deerhoof and I love playing on a small kit. It let's you focus on creating weird rhythms rather than trying to play melody on percussion.

I've always been fond of the smaller diameter but really long bass drums,...from a purely aesthetic standpoint.

I tend to like ones that are really big in diameter and shallow.....like 26x14.

the only drawback i see to the Catalina Jazz kit is that the rack tom only has five lugs, but i figure i can live with that since i'm not planning on tuning it (or the rest of the kit for that matter) particularly high anyway. when i play drums i usually use the snare and floor tom 90% of the time anyway...as you may have gathered by now, i like low-pitched drums with a distinct pitch to them. poorly tuned drums drive me utterly batshit. that's another reason i like small bass drums.

Also, from what I remember, Thermos Malling of Doo Rag played some crazy minimalist set-up.
