what constitutes a tgp board

Post by allicio »

Im wondering this after a funny comment about my board. after thinking about it, i figured it probably is worthy of tgp status. :picard:

so this got me thinking what does constitute a tgp board? Are there certain must have pedals?
Does it have to be wired with George ls?
Never get gigged ?

I once ventured there to ask a question about wood when i was ordering my Anderson and got 36 bullshit replies and have never been back since!!
So i haven't been through the obligatory get your board out for the tgp lads thread so am blissfully unaware of the tgp code of pedal board conduct! :thumb:

At least two ODs (one of which is 'transparent' the other of which is 'organic' that you can stack), super neat, complicated routing paths to multiple boutique amps for clean, dirty rhythm, lead, all true bypass ... then you add a $400 buffer ... with mother of toilet seat inlay that reads JESUS and a Rick Perry 2012 sticker.

Yeah, I didn't get the comment about your board being a TGP board. Maybe it's having a handwired HBOD instead of the cheaper circuit board version. Or actually using a compressor. Or not having 3 separate delays (set up like: delay, dirt, delay delay). Or it missing pedals that only do weird sound effects. :idk:

I think you have a nice, simple board. The HBOD is still one of my all time favorite overdrives. I still need to pick up another one after selling mine to my buddy to help kickstart his first board ever. It was a charity sale. The Snowdrift is also probably one of my favorite modern day fuzzies that's not based on a vintage circuit.

edit: I think it's more "TGP attitude" that I don't like. All of TGP Flavor of the Week pedals that I've owned were great. They're popular for good reason. It's the attitude of "I have to get this new od, so I can be cooler than everyone else, and then people will be jerking off to pictures of my board" or "I need to buy this od, because everyone else is doing it, and I don't want them to think that I'm not cool" or "I need to do everyone a favor, and let them know every time I get a new od, so they don't forget how cool I am." But that attitude can be found anywhere...... even here. It just happens to be with more expensive pedals over there........ usually.

To me, a TGP board means that your board is basically made up of D*A*M, Skreddy, BJFE/Mad Professor, Strymon, Wampler, maybe a Cornish, and a Klon.

Always need to have at least 2 overdrives, but they have to be "transparent", ie what the rest of the world calls a clean boost.

All wiring is custom sized and zip-tied.

They are the geeks that can turn a fun hobby into something uncool with their anal-retentive OCD crap.

TGP has become such a parody of a forum that a tgp board basically equals "anything I don't like" to your average forumite.

For me it's ANY lovepedal (most forums let out a collective yawn over LP but TGP goes batshit for every new electra/fuzzface/timmy clone he releases)
Super expensive "boutique" tube screamers like the HW Ibby or the Boiling Point (I like tube screamers but they sure as shit should never cost $350)
Pedals advertised as having "dots"
Klons.

I never really understood the whole "stacking" thing with several dirt boxes in series. I see that term used at TGP more than anywhere else. Especially phrases like, "I stacked my HoneyBee into my Ethos into my Timmy into my Openhaus.....man, it sounded epic and the whole setup only cost me three mortgage payments!!!!11!!!"

I find that running 2 or 3 or 4 dirt pedals in series requires that I turn down the gain on each one to a point where that it sort of just sounds like one good dirt box turned all the way up. I get the best results from running a clean boost in front of any given dirt pedal to make it more gainy. But maybe that's just me. :idk:

Truth!!! It is equivalent to calling someone/something "hipster" these days.

I agree with the snobbery comments, thats certainly always been my impression of the place.
I work on two principles:
Does it sound good
can i afford it

I've noticed on some forums a kind of inverse robbery occurring, a load of shit pedals on a plank of wood with a its so anti tgp its gotta be cool attitude??

This summarizes my hang up with TGP but I agree it happens everywhere to some extent. A $350 OD is crazy though....

I use a Timeline and Space (TGP'd combo this year no doubt!) and I fuckin' love em both, zero shame or buyers remorse regardless of the insane hype associated with 'em. But pair that with zero instances of bragging/posting fancy pics about one of the more BADASS delay/verb ever and you can start to draw a line between most forums and TGP. :idk: Slap those two among a bunch of fuzz/dirt/noisemakers/mod and I don't think many ILFers would be complaining. It's when you buy to confirm a gear forum "status symbol" that you can officially be labeled a TGP dad rock moron.

Good points allicio, your gear principles are sound.

And you're right about the "anti-TGP" attitude, particularly here but also HCFX. A lot of that hate is deserved though, TGP can lay in the bed they made on that one. In the end, who gives a shit what the "cool kids" on any forum think if you're happy with your setup. :thumb:
