minimalist stripped down drum kits

Post by dorfmeister »

I've been playing a lot of drums lately and I am getting into music with drummers that use really stripped down minimalist kits.

Low would be the archetypal example

Any other bands/drummers in this vein that I should be listening to? What is your take on the trend towards greater minimalism in drum kits?

Even if a drummer uses a big set, I've played with drummers who can do the same beats with a snare, kick, and hi-hat.

If you watch the Tera melos 40 hot rods of summer video, I think he has a pretty stripped down set.

John Stanier of Battles has an intriguing and pretty minimal kit as well.

When my friend Tommy played drums, he only used a snare and a bass drum, and still made me feel like an insignificant musician.

It's funny, I have a band that has two drummers in it, but both of them play pretty stripped down kits. Like, for the both of them, they have three toms, two snares, and two bass drums, and then like, two hi-hats, and three rides.

As far as heavy music, the dude of Iron Lung plays a fairly minimalist kit:

i feel naked without my 3 to 4 crashes, 1 ride, 1 or 2 chinas and 2 splashes. Also- I need two snares... 14" main snare and 10" sidesnare for the punch/short accent stuff... oh, and I NEED MOAR COWBELL! But I'm only rockin' 3 toms... so... I'm more of a cymbal player than a drum player... although I need a bassdrum at least 22" big to feel significant. I always prefer bringing my own kit, since I love my 24"er kickdrum. call me stupid...

The Tune Yards do it extremely well. The singer loops her own voice in a lot of their songs and then sings over it, all while playing a floor tom and snare. Occasionally she'll loop the drums, as she does in the first video.

I like Billy Martin and he tends to keep his set-up pretty simple.
