I used to play with just four strings on my guitar and just banging out chords like that. I didnt ever have to mute any strings.

An inversion is an order of the notes of a chord.

Code: Select all

A first inversion is the basic chord. So here is a Dm 1, 3, 5.

e|-
B|-
G|-2
D|-3
A|-5
E|-

Second inversion Dm 5, 1, 3.

e|-
B|-
G|-
D|-3
A|-5
E|-5

Third inversion Dm 3, 5, 1.

e|-
B|-
G|-7
D|-7
A|-8
E|-

Jfrey, i know, but i know these as "inverted powerchords" :idk: it's easy to refer to them this way

if you want to go to the core of this, they're not even chords ;)

whatever... they just sound awesome through the combo, OKAY?!

haha,...let's inject a little theory into our pedal board thread.

Speaking from a classical sense when dealing with triads,....inversions are when you move the root of the chord into a different voice (for lack of a better term) within the triad, which is what jfrey's chart is illustrating.

Here is a little chart available from google images that shows CMaj (the peoples key; note that it's written on the bass clef and not the treble clef) would be notated in the root,...1st inversion and 2nd inversion.

Image

Notice how all notes are the same but in the 1st inversion the root (C) has been moved up an octave and in the 2nd inversion the root(C) as well as the 3rd (E) has been moved up an octave. The chord is still the same,...just voiced differently.

Easy

I play in an open tuning and whenever someone tries to explain the way I tune to me using all that theory crap
it makes me want to blow my brain's out.

Theory is one of those things that is nice to know but you don't have to. It can also be infuriatingly frustrating as there is so much to learn,...it can take a lifetime for some people to grasp all of it (What I know is but a drop in the bucket).

I took piano lessons for 9 years when I was young and my teacher touched on theory with me,...but I never got any good at it. I also took a few Theory classes in college (I never graduated,...wasn't for me). 101,102,103. There were some breakthroughs for sure and it did help my playing and understanding,...but if you don't nurture it you lose it.

I did find voice leading to be helpful,...things like always resolving the 7th and understanding inversions and chord structures as well as learning scales and how to communicate with bandmates in terms of scale degrees (IE this chord progression is I to IV or I to V etc etc etc) makes it easier for me to fit into bands and learn material.

Again knowledge of theory is not necessary to be a good player (how many "stars" know dick about theory),...but it's a nice tool to have in the box. If you know the rules it's that much easier to break them.

Thanks for this
it gives names to some of the shit I like to do when writing songs. I should really take some piano lessons

Yeah,...learning about inversions (not to mention the differences between major/minor/diminished/augmented) was definitely a break through in putting together chord structures on guitar. It's a great way to inject that little bit of something different than just banging out barre chords which is how I used to be when I was a younger player.

I'm by no means not all the way there (I'd love to get my piano tuned and get back into theory classes),...but it's like that aha moment when a difficult math problem finally makes sense. The sense of gratification when you put two and two together is,...erm gratifying.

Yeah, I no nothing about theory, but let's call a fancy double stop with an added note a fancy double stop with an added note and get back to talkin' gear.
