When I do this kind of work, I usually like to listen to talking. This American Life and the Savage Love podcast are my favorites. Sometimes audiobooks, too. Also good while cooking.

Short answer: I listen to Whitesnake's "Still of the Night" on continuous loop.

Long boring answer:
I usually do podcasts (the best show on wfmu!! The Moth, T.A.L., wtf
with Marc Maron and U.Y.D.)But they can get monotonous if you don't mix it up. Recently I've been zipping through the Game of Thrones audio books. I can't usually listen to new music while working because I get distracted (oh what's that sound what does that dude use) especially when listening to WFMU streaming (free app) When music has layered samples/textures everytime I'm working the baby monitor is on so if I'm listening to dense stuff that's a bigger curve ball (Neurosis, Oxbow, Butthole Surfers,His Hero is Gone) I'm always like "was that the baby?"

How do you guys feel about upbeat stuff vs. melodic/calm stuff for working?

While soldering this week I listened to a lot of Nick Cave's soundtrack work. I guess when I need to concentrate I try to listen to ambient stuff sometimes. But then again, depends on the mood. Once the beers start opening the rock gets turned up. I was listening to Atlas Sound and Beruit at the beginning of last night, bought a 6 pack and then cranked up Minor Threat.

i love ambient music and textural stuff so i gravitate towards that in general in life. that being said, i listen to plenty of upbeat stuff, 80's soft rock, stuff that i can say fuck yeah to

OK, so, just to be clear, I couldn't actually build anything if you held a hot soldering iron to my head, but I've got the scoop on what sounds resonate within the cavernous halls of famous builder's workshops.

I've heard from semi-reliable sources that the following pedal builders are listening to the following music as they build:

(Since he just posted, let's start with) SS/BS - Brian? Despite what he might tell you, he listens exclusively to Liberace.
Devi Ever Fx - Devi? She listens to the "Charlie don't surf" scene fr. Apocalypse Now in an endless loop.
Paul Cochrane - He listens to Monty Python and the Holy Grail while he works. Natch.
EHX - Mike Matthews? The Complete Spoken Word Collection of Wavy Gravy
electronic music/stompbox pioneer John Cage - Mr. Cage listens to silence
ToadWorks - Ryan Dunn? CKY, of course.
Harry DeArmond - anything by Eddie Van Halen
Roger Mayer - anything by Randy Hansen
Z.Vex Effects - Zach? You call that music? That's not music!
Fulltone - Mike Fuller? Some crappy bluesy bar band covering "Born To Be Wild"
Klon- Bill? anything by a "professional" guitarist
Blackout Effectors - Kyle? Only the best Twee pop and Emo
Mountainking Electronics - Alan? Mostly Electroclash with a little Ghettotech thrown in occasionally for good measure
Dr. Scientist - Ryan & Tanya? They sing along to "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" at the top of their lungs. (Same goes for any other couple who build pedals together.)

That's all I've got for now. Perhaps I'll update this further as new surveillance is incoming.

I used to listen to the Runaways, but I kept touching my dick with the soldering iron by accident during Lita Ford's solos <ouch!>

It's almost like this is a list of funny jokes, but you took the word "funny" to mean "obvious, if not entirely confusing".

I would never get any work done with the TV.

@
air - the virgin suicides
brian eno - music for airports

good but old and dead to me now. I was a fan when they were released and I wore them out.
