Reefer works for me. And I also take a considerable amount of time off. I'll go on a spree of making vids,recording,playing leisurely,what have you...then I'll stop when I've shot my whole music-wad. And then, I just lead a pretty ordinary life. As soon as ordinary becomes unbearable, I start writing again.

I'll listen to a completely different genre of music from what I'm comfortable with to get freshened up. Read books. Take apart my pedal train if needed. Anything.
Weed helps a tonne.

anyway, like everyone else has said

take a step back... maybe even do non-musical things...

i have 4-5 books on various things involved with music--including production techniques of classic songs, and 3 books on music theory and composition

i will listen to different genres... or just listen to my favorite album front-to-back to remember WHY i love music...

sometimes we get so caught up in the process that the result suffers (over-complicating songs that need to be simple, etc)

Okay guys. I think bowie thing needs to be its own thread. Will do shortly!

But yeah, I have taken into account what everyone has said and it has helped quite a lot. Listened to some Bowie and Chet Baker, fooled around on the bass, stepped back for a while and suddenly things sounded better to my ears again!

Also, I have been very invested in trying to conjure up some serious doom toanz with my set up, which isn't coming across so well on the strat through my small amps. I need a baritone or something. Drop C isn't low enough...For now I will do my own blend of fuzzy rock muzaks with some pretty ambient noise stuff thrown in and be happy.

Internet forums like this have gotten me away from creating and into collecting tones and searching tone. I need to step back and start creating again for my own health.

Going to go ahead and agree with everyone else here and say pick up a different instrument.

I also find suggesting a jam with friends in a style that a few like but don't play. So i've done death/grind jams industrial/doom jams something that isn't the style you are playing. You'll get idea's from them playing, which will fuel new idea's and hopefully remove the block and give you something to work with.

I go out and eat a snack. Moving around also helps. I take a walk or hop on a bike. I don't drive though, as my mind needs quiet to sort the block out. I also agree with picking up and playing with a different instrument, if you have them.
