Muff experts please
am I looking at an opamp muff on one IC? one TL074 vs the 4558 + 741 or whatever they use in opamp muffs. I don't feel bad for Morley. I feel like they just got caught with hand in muff. coffee talk. discuss...

Re: Muff experts please
doesn't look like a Muff done up with a quad.
Have a look-see:

I think somebody out there has done a Muff on a quad, and used the fourth op amp as an input buffer. Can't recall who.

Re: Muff experts please
ok I'm now looking at the 70's muff on GGG. Q1 is a buffer, Q2 is gain and clipping, the tone is after Q3, and Q4 is just a buffer. I see the morley has the volume in the middle. is this done to keep the output impedance of the pedal constant? the morley is a lot closer to the transistor muff than the opamp muff. they just moved the volume control and Q3 does not have diodes on the morley. the EH opamp muff is a lot harder to make a direct comparison to the morley.

Re: Muff experts please
if by buffer you mean a gain of one, then no the q1 setup is not doing that even on the 70s muff. Even q4 is aboost.
also the 70s muff has 2 clipping stages the morley only has 1.
the morley one looks more like
buffer->clip->gain with some fixed filtering->passive eq(adjustable)->buffer
the 70s big muff looks like
gain->clip->clip->passive eq->boost

when I take a quick look at a schematic, I just think .........gain = boost = buffer
so re-reading it as
my inner monologue wrote:buffer->clip->buffer/filter->passive eq(adjustable)->buffer
buffer->clip->clip->passive eq(adjustable)->buffer
but yeah I see your point. they are not all that much the same. I wonder how the morley would sound with 4558 & 741

mmm i guess but they are actually quite different in so far as fuzzez go. There are likely very few fuzz circuits that could be summarized much differently, assuming similar controls. So you have to think what's different is precisely how said stages are implemented.
input->'too much gain'->output
its the subtleties that seem to make the difference.
