Cheap reliable midi triggered sampler setup for my drummer?

i did the sequenced backing track, loops, using a soft synth for the midi keyboard in my last band. loads of possibilities, too much of a bitch to make sure the laptop was always stable and all the files where sync'd up. any time something was changed it either went smooth, or an annoying clusterfuck of Whwt The Fuck Why The Fuck That JUST Was Fucking Working??!?

i want to integrate some noisy and electronic drum samples and stuff, but i want to keep it all controlled by the drummer and triggered live. i was thinking a good, solid (hopefully cheaper) sampler that i could load up with sounds i tweak out at home and something like the Alesis or Roland multi pad controllers? like http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ControlPad/ ?

don't care about built in sounds, i want to use my own stuff, don't care about a sequencer, if we use any pattern based stuff it'd be coming from the sampler or all ready bumped out as a sample.

go Akai for the sampler? is there a better option for the drummer to have something to hit?

no but srsly- easiest and probably cheapest way: alesis trigger I/O http://www.alesis.com/triggerio
it's not "that" expensive and does the job well.. played with one for myself few months ago... that thing rules! no lag or latency issues.
Then just get a few cheap triggerpads.. they don't have to do shit.. they don't even need to be stereo. cheap ass shit mono triggerpads.. they will work out nicely and don't cost that much money.

hurm. yah, i saw that. so if i went that route i'd need some trigger pads, that, and a sampler? if that's the most.... natural i guess? way for a drummer to get used to using triggers i'm cool with that.

every Akai or hardware sampler i could find is a groovestation or workstation.... ends up being like $500 for a bunch of programming and beat making stuff i wouldn't need. i want to find a super reliable, quick boot up hardware machine that lets me load up samples and trigger them with midi. 2 1/4 outs, a decent amount of memory.

roland sp series (sp202, sp303, sp404) might be a nice sampler option for ya. fits all your reqs except 1/4" outs...it has RCA's.

I think trigger pads are the most "natural" way. Because you just need to hit them with the stick.. like a drum.. no need to press any buttons or something... and it would probably be smoother and faster to do it with triggers... I mean it's faster and more comfortable to just hit a trigger while playing than having to press a button...

yah, i was thinking something like the Octopod for him. something eith 6 or 8 big pads in one unit he could mount next to or inside of his kit?

do they make triggers that just sit over the back lip of a drum? so you can use the drum as normal then hit the rim where the trigger is for samples? THAT sounds awesome.

I don't know any "rim triggers " but I think that would be a bad idea... imagine your drummer hitting the rim on accident mid show and some sample starts playing... but you could look into the "hart hammer" triggers. They're smaller than drum pads and easy to mount into a existing drumset.

each one can take a different sized and style memory card
the newest one, sp404SX, can hold up to like 32gb SDHC or some crazy shit like that.
the regular sp404, i think the limit is 1gb CF, it might be 2gb CF.

both of these have a shit ton of sample time, and u can coax more sample time, if u use the "lofi" when sampling.

sp303 can hold up 128mb smartmedia, which if my memory serves me correctly, is like an hour of sample time, more, again, if u use the lofi modes (303 has 2 lofi modes).

i wont really bother w/ the 202 since its pretty limited overall. (still a badass machine tho, if u like your samples crunchy as fuck)

the newest ones, 404, are the easiest to load sounds up from your computer, and are much faster at processing than the 303. the fx are great in all of them, if that entices u at all.

and u can set each pad's trigger mode individually to gate, loop, oneshot, reverse all in realtime!
