Does anyone make an 'overloading mic' style pedal?

Post by TheOndrakGuy »

Y'know the kind of clipping you get on crappy phone recordings from gigs? That FFFFFCCCCCCCRRRRRRBBBBBBBB style super-blown-out distorted sound like 90% of live MBV videos on YouTube?

Does anyone make a pedal to replicate that kind of sound? I think it'd be great for massive crescendos and blasts at the end of songs.
I know that's a pretty vague description, but I've got rad ideas and can't think of anything that fits the bill at the moment.

What about the Ohnoho Blowing Up?

Of course, you'd have to be sure not to, you know, blow anything up with it. But you could run that dimed into another distortion box or a Rusty Box/Tech 21-style tone shaper (to control volume) and maybe get in the ball park.

I had a Blowing Up running into a RAT and it didn't do a great deal to be honest. In fact, it sounded great (though not what I was after) on its own. I ran it at the end of my signal chain into my amp for a little while... and then my amp blew up.

Part of me thinks the kind of vibe I'm going for is one of those ones that has to be achieved through sheer volume, but for the sake of my amp, my ears and any audience, it'd be nice to be able to replicate it in pedal form.

Wait, so are you talking about loads of volume or metric tons of digital clipping?

A bit of both, maybe? Can loads of clipping get to the stage where it gets all blown-out and billowy like a buttload of volume and a crappy mic?

Really hot signal into a small, shitty SS amp with a little speaker? 4ms atoner and noise swash can probably do it, they're pretty crazy like that.

Ohnoho Blowing up, Torn's Peaker, Fuck OD, Mid-fi Demo Tape(?) or all four at once.

I imagine a lot of DBA pedals do this as well.

A couple bright, raunchy fuzzes stacked on each other, going into a low-wattage tube amp turned way the fuck up.

This, except take the audio out line on the amp and rather than running it to the speaker, put it through one of those 1/8" to tape adapters and play it through an old car stereo.
