Talking into a harmonica microphone

Post by Snowblind »

Has anyone one here ever used one of these for vocals? I know Jack White uses one occasionally and even has one built into one of his guitars. I was wondering if anyone on the forums have tried it out. I always thought it sounded pretty cool when I saw Jack White do it in a video. What are your thoughts on it?

Thank you for that. I really dig that gritty primal sound.

You're welcome. Despite the fact that I sometimes think Morphine had slightly questionable taste stylistically, they definitely were a solid band musically. Sandman was one helluva musician. This is usually the first thing I think of when someone asks about using a harp mic for coloring vocals.

Yeah, Green Bullets. I think most harp mics rule.

(Not to highjack Snowblind's thread, but it seems like I already have.)

ManOfMystery, if you liked those Morphine songs so much, you should check out Sandman's pre-Morphine band, Treat Her Right. They were bluesier:

Oh, yeah, cool idea, jrmy. I totally forgot about telephone handsets.

These guys actually use telephones as mics:

oh yea japanther does the same thing I'm pretty sure. I have been wanting to make one of those telephone mics for a while, maybe I'll finally learn how to soder and make me one over xmas break. The harmonica mic seems cool too I think i'll be looking out for one on craigslist as well.

oh also I was watching a video where it was talking about harmonica mic's high frequency/impedance levels. Anyone know more about this? How well would it work running it through a basic PA?

Snowblind, I don't know specifically about harp mics, but a lot of vintage mics have low outputs. You may need to use a mic pre with 'em.

There are lots of cool sounding old microphones, not just harp mics. Thrift stores, flea markets and swap meets are all good places to look for cheap microphones.
