HNNG to the first part, but then you ruin it by saying to use flats.

IF YOU WERE ME (AS IN I DID THIS ONCE):

Paint the bass something incredibly garish or terrible, stencils a must. Remove pots entirely, go pickup->jack, use tuner as a mute. Get Rusty Box. Get Dean Markley Blue Steels. Get a pick. Play really hard. Never stop playing. NEVER STOP PLAYING. Throw bass as hard as you can against the ground. IT WILL PROBABLY NOT BREAK (LIKE MINE DIDN'T). KEEP PLAYING. LATER ON, scrape off all paint, and wheat-paste fliers to the bass, and then clear coat it. SAND THE HEADSTOCK, WRITE DIRTY WORDS THERE WITH A SHARPIE. KEEP PLAYING.

Recipe for success? I think so. How does removing the pots change the sound?? Aside from not being able to use the volume or tone controls.

It was a birthday gift bought from craigslist, so I'm not taking it back.

I play the shit out of my Bronco bass, which I think is the cheapest Squier bass, and get nice sounds out of it.
As for an amp look out for old Kustom stuff used. If you find the stuff made in Kansas for cheap chances are you will be super happy with it.

It's basically brighter than the normal volume and tone on full sound. Like if your tone knob went further than full open (which is effectively the difference, electronics wise). For budget amps, I like a lot of the cheap peavey stuff, they're generally nice and clean, and get plenty loud.

as for budget amps - I can not recommend enough that you save a few bucks and buying something that will also make a radd loud guitar amp.
#1 in this category is Ampeg V4. You can usually find one for around $500 and it KILLZ.
add some cheap 15" cab to start - Peavey with Black Widows on the super cheap - and you're in bizness.

cheap bass combos will make you want to bash your head against the wall, for real.
Maybe partying will help.

I will be on the lookout for a V4. Those things flit about on the ATL craigslist every now and again.

Any suggestion as far as replacement tuners and bridges? I still need to do this on my strat...
