Korg Monotribe

Post by snipelfritz »

I have seen the Korg Monotron, but I only saw this today. Is it new or am I just oblivious? This seems like the simple yet flexible and affordable synth/drum machine/sequencer I've been looking for for a while.

Anybody use this before?

u could get a used electribe emx for less than those, and get alot more mileage for your synths and drums...not as small/portable tho.

Wow, just looked at the pricetag.
Monotribe is indeed neato, but yeah if you had another $50 or got lucky you could get the EMX. But it is definitely not as portable.

The price is a stumbling block after the price expectation the Monotron created. It's not that it's particularly unfairly priced for what it is (real analog drums and synth, improved "keyboard" control, and pattern sequencer), but alternate options multiply at that price.

Would $199 be that different of a break point on price? Hell, that's just a 20% off sale/ coupon away from normal price -- not every day, but possible.

it's fun...... but it's really REALLY limited. i'd actually rather have the Monotron thinger.

it has no save spots, which kills me on a desktop synth and pushes it into toy realm kinda. EMX IS FUCKING BADASS.

also, when i had the OG Electribe EM1 i built some battery packs out of RC batteries from RadioShack. gave me about 8 hours of not plugged in fun. using them with the EMX i got abou 4 or 5 hours i think.

By no save spots, you mean no patch memory? That didn't come into analog until digital control started to be integrated. That gets pricey. DSI Mopho and Evolver will do patch memory in an analog mono synth, but you lose controller, drums, and step sequencer and pay twice as much. I'm not aware of anything close to the price that's pure analog with similar functionality. If pure analog isn't a big deal to you (and I'm not saying it should be), there are other options.

yah. i'd rather have a sample based synth box with patch memory settings than pay almost the same price for an all analog version. but i'm super anal (giggety) about being able to repeat something i like.

the EMX sounds amazing, and not sterile at all.

128 steps (emx) > 8 steps (monotribe) for ya sequences.

for me, i know 8 steps will get really boring quickly. 128 steps allows a lot more creativity and flexibility.

edit: i think i'm slowly talking myself into an electribe again in this thread huurr

Limitations and simplicity are often better for me when I'm doing stuff with keys, synths, and drum sounds. (I long ago realized that my time is too rare to go too deep into everything, and I still have to fight my inclinations to try anyway.) If someone objectively looked at a TB-303 today and said "Feh! How can you do anything with that?" it would strike a lot of people with knowledge of the thing's history as hilarious.

Electribe might be a good middleground for me compared to stuff like Maschine, Reactor, Live, Max, and so forth. All of which really appeals to me, but until I become independently wealthy, "No time for love, Dr. Jones."

yea for sure, i agree w/ u 100% on limitations and simplicity.
almost every crazy piece of gear i've bought, i usually end up selling b/c of this, and the machines i like the most are the ones where u have to be creative and find quirky workarounds, stuff they don't tell u in the manual, to do what u want. freak the devices ya know?

the electribe doesn't really seem all that much more complex, but my point was that it allows much longer sequences to be made so u dont have the same half bar/1 bar drum/synth loop repeating over and over, or i think u can make longer patterns but u lose note resolution. (i.e 8 steps over 1/2 bar =1/16th note resolution, 8 steps over 1 bar = 1/8th note resolution and so on), which can def be cool sometimes, but its very nice to be able to also make a 2,4, or 8 bar patterns w/o sacrificing note resolution that has change ups, etc. keeps ya shit fresh.

Well, without the limited step sequencer, how else would I explain to my wife why I really need a MIDI MuRF? :idk:
