Doctors almost killed my dad, and now I'm afraid they're about to do the same thing to my mom.

All of the above, kinda! (except surgeries) And poor communication between doctors. My dad was basically strung out for months as they kept changing and adding medications until they finally found a combination that was really awful. He described it as a bad acid trip. While it was happening, he could do some really bizarre things. He has pretty bad joints, but when this was happening he was more flexible than I am. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it... it was really bizarre/horrifying. He had to spend a few days in the hospital after that...

After that, they backed off the medications and he eventually recovered. He didn't work for like a year overall, though.

That all started as a treatment for some stomach bacteria. I couldn't really keep up with why the prescribed the other stuff. I know some of it was painkillers and sleep aids and such.

My mom's been having similar issues just trying to get blood pressure under control. They keep changing her medication and such (which I know is common for blood pressure). She tried to get off of an anti-depressant to help (they can raise blood pressure), and ended up having panic attacks and such. It hasn't gotten -that- bad yet, but no medications are working.

To be fair, a lot of her problem is that she needs to chill the fuck out. I had her sit down and drink a cup of green tea once and her systolic blood pressure dropped by over 20... The doctors have replaced the green tea with Valium... which is seeming like it could be another case of "medication to treat medication." She's on other medications as well, which has already caused some problems.

it really sounds like they need different doctors. it's really hard to deal with medical issues with older folks as well, though...they don't respond dependably, and with the newer meds for blood pressure and other conditions that can lead to all kinds of screwed-up unexpected outcomes. all i can say for sure is that it really sucks and i hope they'll be doing better soon.

it's not just older people, either...i just heard that a friend ten years younger than me, who's already just been diagnosed with lung cancer, can't start her chemo/radiation yet. why? she developed an abcess from a normal tooth extraction which led to a systemic staph infection of a type which is 80% fatal. after five days in the hospital she survived, but must now go to her MD for daily intravenous antibiotics for the next three weeks to ensure that the infection is completely extinguished. somehow having to leave my pedal steel with my attorney as security against my mounting legal bill doesn't seem so bad.

You know that feeling you have throughout the day when you're dead tired, but have to stay away for work or whatever other prior "cannot miss" engagements and wander through them in an exhausted haze, only to start to wake up once you're within eyesight of your bed or abode?

I hate that shit.

i went to look at shit on eBay to kill a few minutes and someone was selling one of those 30W Kalamazoo bass amps with the 7591 tubes that are the low-budget cousins of the Gibson amp i want so much, but i have to talk to my attorney tomorrow about how i'm gonna pay him so i couldn't bid on it though it had no bids, a $250 minimum, and 7 minutes left. sometimes i really hate my life.

The problem is the stuff with my dad happened between two different hospitals and several doctors. I think the amount of doctors was really the biggest problem. Soo... I dunno. I just know it's getting old being in and out of hospitals because of prescription drug issues. I think my mom's really high blood pressure (it spikes at pretty dangerous levels) are mostly because of the anti-depressants.

Fortunately, since I made my first post about this, the doctors think they have figured out that my mom's problem are anxiety related (which I could have told them a month ago), and she'll probably just end up ihaving some pills to take for panic attacks. Which seems reasonable, actually.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Dubster McKittycat. I'm glad she survived, but daily IVs would be pretty rough! And that on top of lung cancer... : /

i've been really wrapped up in my own problems lately, and when i find out about something like what just happened to Trish it makes me feel kind of fucking embarrassed, or the kind of stories i heard from the young Hispanic folks who are friends of my old friends who i visited over Thanksgiving weekend. one of those guys told me about having a cop in a car come up behind him when he was on his bicycle waiting for the light to change and tell him to move so the cop could make a right turn; when the kid picked up the bike and moved it onto the sidewalk, the cop gave him a $255 citation for riding his bike on the sidewalk. or the dude my friend knew when she was in the psych ward who is now doing eighty years in prison for setting a huge shopping mall in Sacramento on fire so they'd send him back to jail because he was too insane to deal with being homeless. at least i have shit i can give my lawyer--who i actually HAVE--to secure his services until i can pay him off.

it's on for real now. i go to the attorneys' office at 1PM to sign paperwork which i then deliver to the Superior Court in Watsonville and file; the hearing will, i gather, be tomorrow. so then i come home, do laundry so i have presentable clothing, and try to prepare myself psychologically.
