Yesterdays recording session.

Post by oinkbanana »

rant thread, i'm a jackass for this and probably going to hell.

so i've been jamming on bass with some new guys I just met off CL. (lets be honest it was only 2hours twice last week.)

the drummer's dad works in a studio and was hooking him up with free recording time.
so i learn the tunes quickly (no sweat since they're basically all 3 chord songs, wishfully nirvana)
and we go in yesterday to record.
i'm told I just need to bring my bass & a pedal for a little dirt, they have everything there.
i haven't hear the singer sing at practice yet at all, but apparently he's got a great voice.

get there
vocal mic is a 5$ pc microphone with a 1/8" to 1/4" converter
there's an electronic drum kit with a Roland sound processor... they spend 1hour going through the presets to find a good one.
the guitar is getting recorded DI, with a Boss mega-distortion pedal for the dirt. no amp.
bass direct. i'm plugged into the line in of a 4 track behringher mixer.
they decide that i better get turned down since i'm new.
actually everyone is plugged into this mixer.
he's tracking into his PC computer the stereo mix. it looks like it's from 1993.
we're told not to worry about the little glitchy digital sound, it's to be expected from digital recording.

i'm just too shocked to be appalled.
the other two guys love it and couldn't be more impressed with the results. "it sounds total pro"

have a listen: http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/88737-defect.mp3

I'm now taking submission/suggestions on what to say in my "i'm quitting" email.
now posting as Forrrest.

I suggest you do it face to face and not by email.

Yeah man, definitely say it in person, but don't stress too much about what to say. Just say that you just want to do other stuff. This kind of discussion about aesthetics could go too deep to explain properly, especially if you've only played with them a couple of times.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

Sorry to hear that things didn't work out. Sometimes they don't.

I couldn't get more than a minute into listening to that clip.

Just explain to them (in person) that you're sorry, but what they're doing just isn't what you'd like to be doing. That should be enough. No need to go into more detail.

email is fine. I mean, you saw them once or twice for two hours, and met them off of craigslist, it wasn't like you were planning on going on a world tour. Not that they could.... sorry that you had to experience that.

Didn't register the only 2 hours of hanging out, nor did I listen to the clip.
Now that I have done both, email 'em something short n' sweet and don't look back.

Oh god oink, you deserve one of these

Learn to play the song before recording the song, would be my "constructive criticism" for those guys. Also, less focus on singing like Cobain.

i apologize to everyone who listened to the clip... i've NEVER hear anything so bad or been in a band with people who thought something like that was 'good sounding'

need to get my jam on and get that rock medicine into my veins.

:picard: I'll forgive You, I was a fool to listen to that despite the story. The drummers dad work in a studio? In a real studio? And he was supposed to hook this group some actual studio time? What kind of cruel joke is this? :erm:

I've been to a situation not much unlike this (with an audition for a band that was supposed to do something professional until I found out that the band leader would have had a promising future in marketing, not music, selling me the gig) and I got to say You were pretty diplomatic about it when You could have just walked out of there calling them stupid fucks in middle of the unfortunate demo session.
