Favorite AC/DC-type pedal?
I know there's already like a million posts on this subject... And I know "SG->cranked-Marshall" is the only way to nail it...
I'm just curious what your favorite pedal is to get close. I've tried the Wampler plexi-drive and the Rockett Animal, and they're OK. But lately I've been thinking about giving the OCD or the Zvex Distortron a shot.
What pedal do you guys think gets closest to Angus' tone?

No, I've seen the posts on other forums, that's why I'm asking here

All I have to say is, I had an OCD once. For, like, 3 days. Least favorite pedal ever. I think I didn't like the hard-clipping-ness. I guess maybe it could get near AC/DC toanz, but I wasn't specifically trying for that so I don't really remember. I just remember hating it on all settings.

Re: Favorite AC/DC-type pedal?
Yeah, you need some sort of mid-gain overdrive. I have an electro-harmonix germanium OD. It's nice, gets nice, fairly aggressive, classic rock sounds, but is still pretty clear. It also has a voltage sag and bias if you really want to experiment with the sound. Not too pricey either (EHX seems to have the best quality for real low prices compared to most companies, big-box or boutique).
Ok, the rest of this forum is gonna hate me for it, but you might want to try a tubescreamer. A ts-808 is definitely the best option if you go that route. Analogman also does some pretty cheap tubescreamer mods. Never got any done when I had a TS, but I know he generally does superior quality work. For all the flack they get around here, tubescreamers aren't bad if you're looking for a less noisy sound on a lower budget. I love having a more conservative OD at the start of my chain rather than some sort of clean boost.
But, I'm also a big proponent of that theory about volume you mentioned(more important than the SG and Marshall if you ask me). If you want it to sound best, especially if you're going for these kind of dirty OD tones you've got to be cranking a tube amp and pushing the preamp with some considerable gain. So if you're trying to get set-and-forget settings make sure you're not playing quiet. If you're practicing that's fine, but don't adjust your sound based on that.

I don't think you have to sweat it, Dan, you're gonna find lots of AC/DC in the package I'm sending you on Monday.

Re: Favorite AC/DC-type pedal?
Are you overdriving an amp that might get that sound with a little help or are you looking for the full sound before a crystal clear amp? For the former, it can depend on the amp, but look at cleanish flat-response boosters and treble boosters until you find a winer with your amp. Otherwise, FIIK.

I seem to recall when I built a SHO, running it in to my cheap solid state amp gave it an AC/DC tone at full bore.
