who rocks crazy altered tunings?

Post by Zounds Perspex »

just asking because I'm about to get back to my roots, do some restringing, and scrape the pentatonic crust off my playing.

F#-F#-B-B-D-D anyone? what's yer favorite tuning of pain? hey, you plain ol' open tuners are welcome, too.
Maybe partying will help.

I play a lot of the old standard alt tunings, open G, open A, open D, open E. I used to always have a guitar that was always in Robert Fripp's new standard tuning -- CGDAEG -- I need to get back to that. It's an odd one for sure.
Played classical a bit in C# minor (c#, g#, c#, g#, c#, e) -- you ever heard Koyunbaba by Carlo Domeniconi?

It's not odd, except I don't know anyone else that uses it. Perfect fourth tuning. I keep one guitar in it.

uh, you mean fifths I think? except that high G. and of course violinists, cellists, and all those sorts tune in fifths.
what string gauges do you use for that, jfrey?
Maybe partying will help.

I have not heard that, but I have used minor open tunings before.
I've never understood why they weren't more popular - just add a fret on one string and you have a major chord,
and then minor is there for the taking. I always had the G string tuned to the third, though.
Maybe partying will help.

Oh! and that tuning you listed for Carlo What'shisface, devnulljp, is the same one Albert King used. weird.

No. P4 tuning. The strings are fourths.

For example:
E - F# - G# - A
1 - 2 - 3 - 4

So E P4 tuning is:
E - A - D - G - C - F

I use it on my semi-hollow with DR Lite and Heavy 9s (or sometimes Elixirs). The gauges are:
9 - 11 - 16 - 26 - 36 - 46

ok. but the tuning dev listed - CGDAEG - is mainly fifths, hence the confusion.

Guitar player in my last band used some wacky tunings he came up with himself. Stuff like GAEGAD and so on.

Aside from the basic down-tuned versions of Standard and Drop D, I hate playing in stuff like. It's so limiting.

I've got one bass tuned in fifths. Gonna start learning some cello stuff to reinforce it, cause its a lot of fun.

I like open tunings, major and minor. Having 2 strings tuned the same is great too, like GGDGBD, you get this really cool chorus-y thing going on. C G D G B E is cool, I might try tuning fully in 5ths some day.

A fair few.

A fair, fair few. About 27 odd.

CADGAE, AACEBC, CGCGCd#, B F# B E F# B, these would be favourites.

I'm actually only learning E Standard now. It's an interersting tuning.
I play.

I always messed around with alternate tunings... until I saw Lee Ranaldo play at a music festival last year. Now I almost exclusively use alternate tunings and some open tunings. Personally I find limiting yourself to standard tuning to be very limiting. I love inventing new chords and finding new combinations everytime I pick up my guitar. I find standard to sound kind of ugly now. Anyways these are a few of my favorites:

FACFCF
G#G#G#BbCC
DGDGBbD
CGCFAB
EBEEBE
F#AEG#C#B

Also has anyone tried Lou Reeds ostrich tuning? Having all the strings tuned the same would be kind of cool but I don't want to go through all the effort of put six A strings on my guitar.

I tune for AA to BF#BEG#C# which is basic drop style B, if my 8 string ever comes in.... (fukkin USPS parcel post is now at 3+ weeks)..... will be DADADGBD or maybe even weirder depending on how it feels and what i plan on doing..... I've also played around with BF#BF#AB which was pretty cool for some drone stuff i was playing around with doing some crazy 6 string bar chords....
