OK, so, I was just thinking about this some more.

If you're looking for a BAT pedal. The Black Forest would be a good choice. It's good for rhythm and it's got lots of treble on tap. It gets fuzzy, but not overly fuzzy. Again, it would be good to stack with another dirt box. It's pretty versatile.

This. The Manx Loaghtan sounds almost exactly like what you're looking for. The note clarity when playing open chords is pretty crazy for a Muff. Check out this demo.

So, to chime in with my two cents,

IF YOU LIKE LOW END: Pharaoh, all the way. I seriously can't get a setting that lacks lows. It's so massive and ballsy.

IF YOU LIKE CUTTING MORE THAN YOURSELF: Buzzaround. Actually, totally had that same EQD Sound Shank modernage has now. Shit rules, just is a different polarity than normal pedals. It really is best summed up as "all the things I like about muffs, and none of the things I don't".

Also, considered looking into Tonebenders? Maybe a MKIII would be to your likings? I dug the one I briefly borrowed from elwd, and tonebenders are great with chords from my experiences (inb4devnulljb chimes back in).

Thanks for the suggestions. I can't watch any demos until my internet quota resets in a few days, but I'll check them all out.

Kinda leaning towards a Pharaoh right now, but the Catalinbread Manx sounds good from the descriptions. The Buzzaround is also tempting.

Who makes good Buzzarounds? The only ones I know of are the EQDs which I believe are no longer in production and the Skinpimps which are a little pricey and don't have an ac adapter which is a bit of a bummer.

Hm, so many ways to go.

If you're looking for a Muff that suits you better, you might want to check out the 4-knob Hoof, the Manx and if you don't like the Musket, maybe the Blunderbuss Variant is more to your taste.

If you are definitely looking for great with chords, then I'd say you should either go for a clean blend (Team Awesome Fuzz Machine!!!) or look at the less well behaved overdrives, like the Mountainking Ruckus (Which I dearly love), or a Black Forest, a Creepy Fingers Doomidrive or the Algal Bloom. All of these sit in between Fuzz and Overdrive and should work well with chords. I have the Ruckus, that one is amazing, very full and beefy, and have had the Algal Bloom which was a little hard to control for me. The controls are all very interactive and that is something that some people love but I'm a simple mind.


Now for a post-punk tone I would go with something completely different.

I never found a Tone Bender that worked well with chords.

I recently got a Crazy Tube Circuits Pin Up fuzz,
it's muffish, with a knob that you can control the mids,
so you can make it scooped or mids heavy.
Plus a footswichable upper octave. Really nice and versatile.

Now I'm torn between the TAFM, Manx, Pharaoh, and a Buzzaround.

Bump.
So I'm probably going to order a TAFM during Prymaxe's sale. I haven't been able to find many guitar demos for it, but I love what I've heard. I was just wondering if this fuzz can also do some classic muff tones, like Smashing Pumpkins and Dinosaur Jr stuff?

If not it doesn't really matter, I can just use my EHX muff for that, it would just be convenient if it could handle that stuff.
