Catalinbread haters, anyone?

Post by grokostimpy »

Am I the only Catalinbread hater in the world?

I always read awesome reviews, and then I see so-so videos, and I've tried several myself. They just never deliver for me; they sounds artificial and gimmicky at best. My most recent disappointment was the Montavillian Echo, which I'm currently exchanging for a wampler... Hopefully for a more natural sound.

Am I crazy, or does Catalinbread just not deliver? :idk:
They do have cool graphics tho!

teaser stallion was nice when i had one (several years ago - great oscillation) - but sold it.
semaphore was ok, but had a treble boost that i didn't liked. sold it.

still have the perseus and really like that one...

edit, mixed up prometheus and perseus

The original (v1) wiio has been one of my favorite pedals for about 2 years strong now.
Everything from subtlle low gain OD to bordering on angry fuzz.

SFT kills on bass/low tuned guitars.

It's a pretty bold statement to say you hate an entire line of pedals.

I still lust after an SFT.

yeah, SFT is pretty damn good. I haven't tried any of their other pedals.
Maybe partying will help.

I think their pedals are kinda hit or miss, but they certainly are good at creating hype way before a pedal's release.

To me, their line seems less geared toward the experimental, noisey crowd and more toward emulating some classic amps or sounds and doing those well. For what they do, they do it well, but I can see where they don't appeal to a lot of folks here. I'm surprised the tgp crowd doesn't eat up their line a bit more, but then too many tgp folks eat up the mystique of every new $250+ overdrive as a status symbol instead of realizing the practicality of cbread offerings.

Yea, hit or miss for me also. I've had a bunch and don't have any if that means anything. The DLS is cool, and I'd like to try the #5. And I had a v1 wiio and it was one of the most abrasive sounding ODs I heard.

this is actually a selling point for me.

yeah, I don't have an SFT anymore, but that doesn't mean anything - I've flipped plenty of pedals I've liked for the next new thrill.

I've never been drawn to their pedals other than that one square wave tremolo they had.

In my mind their a pedal line that creates pedals that emulate classic tones but try to sound experimental just by putting oscillation in a pedal. That way a more tame pedal user can say they have an "experimental" pedal. There's nothing wrong that and like you said they do it well. I've looked into their pedals time and time again and I can't really bring myself to try one of their pedals... with an exception to their tiny square wave tremolo they cancelled. That and if I played in a different kind of band/different kind of music I'd definitely check out a Teaser Stallion. :omg:

I probably won't buy any Catalinbread pedals, because he came on here and was a dick to Ryan from Dr. Scientist.
That's pretty uncool. I won't buy new because of it.

I also had a WIIO. I thought it was pretty cool for a while, but it was kind of hard to control. I ended up selling it to my buddy on the cheap.
I think the SFT sounds pretty cool. If someone offered me one of those in a trade I might say yes.

That was pretty fucking lame especially considering it was such old news between those guys by then. Also, Nic had the Manx to promote at the time so his appearance didn't seem very genuine.

But hey, I know another builder that spams far worse....

I have their Dirty Little Secret, like the sound, stacks well, but it lost out to the Fuck. Which is similar to most of their pedals, looks cute but there's better alternatives.
