Need an amp for bassing.

Post by Moustache_Bash »

You people got any good recommendations for a bass amp? I don't really want to spend more than $600. Preferably a combo, but whatevs. My last set up was usually an ACC 150 through a single 15, and it was just loud enough (volume maxed) to keep up with my ham-fisted drummer. Would like more volume than last time.

I just found out a bass I had on consignment has sold, and the store it sold at is a Hartke dealer. I'm thinking a Hartke 5210c, but I still have to try it.

I have a friend that has a Hartke, and loves the toanz, but it's kinda cheap, as in, the fan doesn't always turn on, so it overheats, and it kinda feels cheap.

Hmmph, I don't like that.

Been doing a lil' more research, it seems that Hartkes are really scooped. NOT OK.

I have a feeling I will just have to cave in to tubeys for the toanz I like. Maybe I'll get lucky, and find a YBA-1 eventually.

My Hartke has a graphic EQ so I can pretty much just dial in whatever.

Ah, good to know, thanks.

It's probably just slap happy jazz fusion dickheads then that end up making it sound that way. I swear, 90% of the market for bass stuff is aimed at them. WHY THE HELL WOULD I WANT A BASS WITH 6 KNOBS, AND NO MIDS?

MY FUCKING GOD, I KNOW.

i mean, the guitar world is most obviously geared towards metalheads, but NOWHERE to the extent of the bass world is towards slap bass.

I'd look at used SWR in that price range. I have Bass 350 and Bass 750 heads from pre-Fender-takeover and both are great, simple amps. Tube pre and plenty of power, easy to dial in. If you're not into slap happy jazz fusion dickheadery, I think they will agree with you very well tonally. And definitely better quality than the Hartke shizz.

Gallien-Krueger stuff is worth a look too. I don't have a ton of experience with the newer stuff, but I have played bunches through the older 800RB and little brother 400RB and they crank out good toanz for full solid-state. They get dirtier than SWR stuff, but both take pedals very well.

The GK stuff that allows for bi-amping is also pretty nice.

Used Peavey is definitely the budget-friendly way to go. You should be able to snag a Mark-something and a 2x15/4x10 for $300 or less.

Also, definitely go head+cab unless you're playing super quietly.
good deals are here.

Hartke HA3500 all day. If it sounded scooped then the person playing is stoopid.

I will say it's worth the money to go head/cab. In my experience, bass combos aren't very good.

Yeah, prolly better in the long run to get the head/cab for the versatility.
I'm not trying to be a salesman but it just came to me...you can get an HA3500 + a used cab (Peavey or something as previously mentioned) for within your price range without much hassle. I got my HA3500+410 for $500 total. Although now I would like a different cab that suits me a bit better, there's nothing wrong with it.
