I always get bored of that question because that conclusion seems so obvious. If we have free will, sweet, if we don't I'd rather live in ignorance thinking we do than find out I don't actually get to make choices.

dubkitty wrote:my personal conclusion to the question of free will vs. determinism--which is what we're talking about here, i think, when you get to the heart of it--is that even if free will is an illusion one may as well act as if it's real. life is more interesting when i feel like an actor in the play.

Because I'm bored I'll weigh in on how I have always viewed this. I began thinking about this when I was 6 or 7, and have continued to daily since then.

Imagine that around you hovers a ring. You can move anywhere within the ring, but not beyond it. The ring moves with you, such that whenever you move, the area to which you can move opens in that direction and closes behind you. Some people start out with larger or smaller rings, or with rings that skew in one direction, thus limiting or enabling their ability to move in certain ways.

Now, everything you do, or say over the course of your life continuously impacts the size and skew of the ring, thus freeing, constricting, or directing your movement. Everything that is said, or done to you, or around you, or to those around you (etc), applies external pressure to the shape and size of the ring - however is limited by your internal influence on the ring. Your will, focus, and personal character form the integrity of the ring, the strength of your body and mind, and the choices you make, things you learn, and practice of any skill, ability, or study affect the size. So, you in turn not only affect the size or shape of the ring by your motion, but the ability to resist or heed external sizing and shaping.

Your motion is your free will, the interior of the ring is your fate.

Etc. Etc. I could write a book about this idea, but I won't.

I view free will like this: there is a theater, and a play. we are the actors, destiny is the director and his story will be done to ONE ENDING. and the actors choose how it goes, but they all get 'there'. the ending -> the destiny; the play -> life

cuz yeah.
dubkitty wrote:and that's where action meets up with the other part of the equation that's missing and makes it look like a loop: responsibility. the function of a "cutting edge" is not to dither about its nature; it is to cut. you have to make the decisions, perform the actions, and manifest the thoughts which determine your fate, and the consequences of those actions create the shape of things to come like the random-yet-mathematical development of the fractal.

this.

but, we all 'do it' and 'don't do it', cuz you don't have to, the equation wants to know EVERY outcome, and only one/a few will have all the parameters entered right. that's the point of 'all this' really. just more levels of it we don't know of yet. there's really too much to say, but too few truths to follow.

Pro tip: if you have the option of writing an in depth analysis of a chapter or writing a short essay in the style of the author of the book, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ANALYZE THE CHAPTER.

What if the author is Dr. Seuss
and the analysis is like chasing a goose?
What if all you write, stinks like deuce
and Snoop the Dog drinks gin and juice.

Are you sure the analysis is easier still?
Easier than the excellent adventures of Ted and Bill.
If you're mildly irritated, take a pill.
Or buy some pedlulz and you'll feel better still.

I read that post and took it as a challenge. My blood boiling and not just from the Wild Turkey and psylocibin coursing through it, I read MEC's poetry. Sitting here in class, I look for a distraction from the idiocy of my classmates and cluelessness of the instructor sniffing like a bloodhound for anything that might catch my fledgling attention. Suddenly, I even lose interest in this asinine activity and go on taking notes for the class. I wonder if my attempts to sound like Hunter S. Thompson hold any water or if I sound like the absurd, rambling idiot I really am.

So I'm going after this chick, and my friend, after getting rejected by a different girl, tells me I'm cock blocking him from getting with the girl I'm after. He knew I was going after her, and now because he got shot down, he's trying to get with this girl?

Is he fucking serious? Like seriously?
