I think it's technically the mix, not the gain, but it works very similarly.

The Rainger FX Dr. Freakenstein has an awesome little extension pedal called Igor that kinda tweaks the modulation of the Freakenstein fuzz...

Mr. Rainger himself has an ILF account - seen him around a bit in Gear and D.I.Y. The Dr. Freakenstein goes for a bit more than $26, though...

I was gonna say "sooooo basically you want the elements" haha

controlling the mix instead of the gain is much better IMO.

Did it in the 90s with some of the 'you can route anything to the expression pedal' rack units and floor multifx.

Was a usable option maybe once every few sets to fade something in from quiet to mean, but didn't offer much that just rolling off guitar volume didn't have already.

If you'd like I can automate the proces for you and get a demo up; can assign a fixed wave or LFO sweep to the gain on a couple of my units to illustrate what exactly it does and doesn't do.

The Experimentalists Anonymous Parallel Universe has it and I absolutely love it. I've tried it with other pedals, though, and it doesn't always work out. You need a circuit that sounds good from low to high gain. The PU goes from a nice overdrive up to thick fuzz and it's perfect. I keep it at the beginning of my chain.

Word. Or volume pedal.

Gain knobs are almost always just volume controls at the beginning of the circuit. Some work differently than others, but it's always the same effect.

snipelfritz wrote:Not a builder, but I'm sure it's possible. The gain knob on the pedal is just a potentiometer(turns to control resistance), if you put that on some kind of rocking spindle outside of the enclosure, there you go!

I'm just not sure how practical that would be. Tone might be cooler actually

It could actually be a very simple mod I'd imagine. Just reroute the wires where they would go to the gain knob and instead have them go to a cable insert that you've installed.

yeah, just re-route the pot wires to a 1/4" jack, as he said. One caveat though; the 1/4" jack, i suggest either using one with a plastic housing, or electrically isolating it somehow from the metal enclosure of the pedal. 'Cause this idea is something i've done on a pedal i built (not for gain; i think it was a feedback control or something) and i couldn't figout why it didn't work until i realized that the metal jack was in contact with the case, and therefore grounded along with all the other in/out jacks (duh)

as far as building your own footpedal, look around the internet for ideas there, i've a couple of my own, but so far not quite finished one working copy, so can't suggest them. One nifty idea i've seen is to use a photocell eye, and an led, where the pedal brings them closer to or further from eachother. Really you could just skip the hinge altogether though, and mount a photocell in a box that you step on/wave your foot over/ whatever, and setup a lamp nearby if necessary.

also, i don't think this is a weird idea at all; i would love to have foot treadle control for just about everything; tremolo speed is the one i've always wanted to do this to most though

+1. Just have your "normal" playing at, say, halfway up on your volume knob. When you need more gain, you turn the knob up:

Devi's newer Circuit Breaker does CV/exp. LFO controlled gain on that leads to fun times.

I was about to say that the fuck does have it, but it controls the threshold.... I think the gain should've been a higher priority.
