Fender Champion 600

Anybody have any experience with this little guy? Looking to buy a small tube combo for recording, and for $170 that's a steal (provided it's actually a good amp). From what I've found on the web, it seems to be a great amp, but second opinions etc.

it is a great little clean amp.... diff sounding than a tweed champ as the 600 doesn't break up, just stays clean and bright.

It's a pretty nice clean amp, gets very cool slight breakup if you crank the volume. I reckon through a bigger/better speaker than the stock one it'd sound even better.

I have seen these go for around 120 used and last year one of the big online guys was doing these for 100.
They are great little amps that are excellent for home jamming or recording.
You can get a much better sound by hooking it up to an external cabinet too.

I have the Champion 600 and it's good for what it is, a small practice/recording amp. I have run it though a larger cab with good results (and my 2x15 bass cab with not so good results). You get mild breakup when you crank the volume and it takes pedals well, my EDQ Tone Reaper and FH Velcrossilator really shine though this amp. If you can find a used one for under $140, grab it, otherwise kick in the extra $$$ for a Marshall Class 5. The guitarist in my band has a Class 5 and it blows away the Fender. It holds its own with a hard hitting drummer during practice sessions, something the Fender could never pull off. The Class 5 comes in a head only version now too. But if you are just using the amp as a bedroom/recording amp, it will do the job.

I'm not a big fan of marshals, but luckily it's only going to be used for recording and screwin around in my living room. I'm actually surprised it has the headroom for effects. I've never seen such a tiny amp take effects well at all.

Probably because the amp has a good clean tone as a base to build on. True, there is not a lot of headroom and your jaw isn't going to hit the floor from the overall tone, but you can get very useable sounds with some dirt and reverb/delay. And if you plug into a 1x12 cab it gets even better.

I have a gretsch G5222 that is the same amp as the fender with different cosmetics

I def like the visual appointments on that Gretsch...if I can find a used one for a good price I'll be snatching it up.

I didn't really like it. Yes it was clean, but I though it was a bit sterile. Almost like a solid-state.
