
Worth buying stock effects for live performance?

You're going to spend money on cheaper versions so that if those get stolen you could replace them with the same cheaper versions? Basically bringing that total to the same cost as replacing the original fancy ass stuff.

Keep in mind he's got really expensive stuff...that's nearly a $1500-$2000 board just for those few pedals right there.
I stand by the m9/13/podhd suggestion.
I just saw thrice play, all 3 guys were using m13's/podHD500's and they were TIGHT as hell and sounding amazing.
The routing options are just begging to be used live and while the looper isn't as nice as the boomerang, I prefer it to many others (at a fraction of the cost when you consider everything it does)

for what its worth, it can be handy to have a couple of just in case effects. A cheap behringher knock off or two can do wonders for peace of mind.

Indeed, as Gunner Recall said, losing one or two of those could be, potentially financially crippling. Not to mention tricky to find. I may have some pretty hard-on-the-wallet stuff, but believe me, I starve and work for those. I'm not much of an effects flipper, I tend to get to know things inside out before I buy them, and stick with 'em. I picked up the amp I did as I liked the clean channel. Instead of upgrading I'll probably have the thing modified, and keep it for as long as it's living. I'm just that sort.
Also, Ireland has the whole shipping/tax issue thing, so things are a little harder to come by here.
Like, if someone steals a Boss pedal, thats 50 quid or so gone. I can pick one up anywhere. There's nothing I can't do without, I can pretty much get away with playing a set acoustically if need be, so overseas and that, I don't know if I could justify the cost of extra gear/risk of losing the hard to come by stuff.
Decoy strat is an amazing idea. Gave me a chuckle.
Agreed about handy spares. There's a few behringers and whatnot lying around. Not mine, but I wouldn't have any trouble borrowing them.
I have a GT-10 that I never use. Might be able to trade it for one of those Line 6 things. I have access to one also so I might give it try.
Also, I also don't really have stuff for "home use". When I'm sure of a situation, or it's convenient, I'll probably bring my rig.It's more the 10% of the time I'm not. We played a festival (for free, in aid of Shell to Sea) in June, and one of the dudes in the band had a mic he had lent the organisers stolen. And it's not like we could ask them to replace it, they barely broke even and the thing was a fundraiser.

If it's mostly the financial aspect of this, did you ever consider insurance?
The musical stuff I have is covered while at home as part of an inventory policy but that doesn't cover it while out and about playing gigs or rehearsals nor for storing it at my rehearsal space. To solve all of that they offer a valuables policy here where you have to list every item you want insured along with the price, plus some proof of ownership, for which a picture works. There's no depreciation or other insurance crap where they haggle you over the price, the value you listed is what you get should shit get stolen, trashed, etc. It might not be the cheapest policy, I had the insurance company run a quick calculation based on a value of € 5000 and the policy would cost about 100 a year. Of course that's a year, you could limit the policy to just a period where you'll do gigs to lower the price.

Insurance.
We have a special insurance that's tailored for musicians we share with all the bands in the practice room. It covers theft and damage in the room, same thing for when we play out. I think there is some exception for when stuff is stolen from a car. Other than that we're golden. Yup, insurance.

That's also not a bad idea. That out and about insurance is worth looking into. Our rehearsal space is in the home the piano player and share, so I'm not hugely worried about that side of things. It's mainly for shows.
We're pretty careful, we don't leave stuff behind, and the majority of us don't drink (before or after a show, or at all). It's pretty much exclusively theft, as pedals are easy to steal, and mine were pretty hard work to get. Again, Ireland. Most of the interesting stuff is hard to come by, or eBayed/direct ordered.
If someone managed to take the violin off my back, or carry off my amp when I wasn't looking, I think I'd just be impressed. Then very sad, because I would never be able to afford to replace that violin.

Stuff can get ruined by assholes at small venues.
O Brother recently played a show and they were forced to stack all there shit near the side of the stage where all the people watching, people kept propping beers up on their guitar cases/amps/boards.
If you are worried about theft just stick with your board inside the venue, and keep someone in the van if you are leaving it parked somewhere.
