I heard Nick Drake in a coffeeshop yesterday. 3 albums worth. That was pretty mindblowing.

Oddly enough, listening to Somnia, they were the first comparison that I could draw. The push/pull sort of feeling between the instruments is definitely there. Ever-present duende. Yours just happened to be much more stark and desolate than Dirty Three.

Jesus, that's a hell of a compliment. I love that band more than any other. Live, they killed me. Jim White is the best drummer in the world.
I spent quite a bit of the morning learning the violin parts for 'Sea Above...'. there's a phrase that resembles a George Michael song. Never 'Gonna Dance Again'. The sax solo.
Also, that song is depressing for many, many reasons, so we are still on topic.
I play.

i used to work with a guy who told me their song "drug" was about him. a few weeks ago i saw this comment on youtube:
Saw John Grant live yesterday, in Denmark, he sang this song and explained how he wrote it. Apparently it's inspiried from his cocaine dealer who tried to kill himself on John's couch

Deserved, sir.
Live, they were a mind-melter. Top 5 performances I've ever witnessed, and fucking yes about Jim White. I could watch the guy drum for hours and never get bored. I also wouldn't doubt Warren Ellis being a George Michael fan.
And very very yes. That whole album pulls you down to a very dark place. I saw them perform it with Nick Cave on piano, and it was really something that I can't ever begin to describe.
