Has anyone heard of this amp?

Post by Psyre »

It's a 60's Alamo Challenger. 12w Tube. Any info would be nice, as one of these just popped up on local CL for about $185, but I have no idea the value. :idk:

Budget amp of its era. Probably a bit above what I'd consider fair market but I haven't seen one in a long time.

Given the large number of bedroom etc wattage amps of more modern vintage (that won't require recapping etc most likely out of the box), I'd personally probably pass. You probably won't know the maintenance history if any of the thing.

Can always play it to see if you fall in love though.

If I recall will be on par volumewise with a BF/SF era Champ, with less headroom and a cheaper speaker.

I remember choosing between the Alamos and Silvertones and Kays and whatnot in the vintage shops in the early 90s and just spending an extra $50 on the Fenders of known maintenance history.

Not saying it'll be bad but it'll depend a lot on what you want to do with it.

Alright thanks, that's really all I needed to know. I probably will pass, just wanted to make sure it wasn't something I would miss out on.

Ones to watch for are the Gibsons of the era before they went solid state.

They don't sell for much a lot of the time and sound pretty decent.
