Right from the start art should be separated from art history. I got straight 90s on my art work but my final mark was like %75 because of the damn art history. Those are two very different talents that can't be mixed to show any sort of conclusive information.

Art History, at least the classes for art majors are a bitch.
Only a masochist would take it if they didn't have to.

And people always say that art classes are bogus.

Man, art classes are hard. There's a ton of reading involved in pretty much any major you choose. :grumpy:

Art history barring the Art Theory mumbo jumbo was actually a lot of fun. Better go don my gimp suit ;).

All the art classes I've been in, Junior High and High School, I never had to learn anything about art history. In Elementary School, we had an art teacher come once a month, and he'd teach us some art history, and then we'd draw in the style of that artist.

In Junior High, my art teacher was impressed with me on day one, and let me do as I pleased, regardless of what she was teaching or having the other students do. The same with my High School art teacher. I could take any damned art class I wanted, because we had all sorts, pottery, paper mache, collage, and so forth, and I was allowed to sit on my ass with my headphones on and draw cartoons without being told shit. I was even allowed to teach art classes in High School a few times.

I guess I'm one of the few who had a good experience with art classes in school? I can't say much for college, because I never went ;|

I had many good experiences with art classes! But the topic is about BS.

In middle school I took self-directed "flex" classes where I could draw whatever I wanted. I went to a technical high school and majored in commercial art, where it was taught very much like college art classes and I learned everything I ever needed to know. I took art in college and have a BFA in art. I love art history. The toughest art classes I ever took were Philosophy of Art (taught by the college Philosophy department) and Serigraphy, where I had to make several multi-color silk screen prints, culminating in a 15-color print. It was too much for me, but since it was my last college class, I was allowed to pass with a D so I could graduate. In the previous 2 years of art classes I got all As. :idk:

Yeah my art classes were good, but there are moments where things got too.... idk, fake. Those little moments where they try to dissect the meaning from your drawing that you just created because you though it might look cool.

I didn't get to take a lot of art classes. I wish I did. I have the desire, but I have no skill. Seems like art classes should be teaching you boring techniques. I have ideas, but I can't seem to recreate them in physical media. If I had some physical ability, I feel like I'd be able to get my thought out of my head into physical media.

If you handed someone a guitar without guidence, they'd be up shit's creek. On some level, you need some basic, rudamentary guidelines.

Of course, the concept of grading artistic creations is a bit silly. but, most teachers are probably required to do so, and if they give everyone an "A"", then they get called out for review. It's gotta suck being a professional art teacher.
