New dirt

Post by Roseweave »

I reckon this would be the best place to ask.

Basically I'm still looking for some crazy distortion effect to define my own tone. I have an Aenima which I love to bits, but it's noisy so I more use it for the Ohshitwhathefuck breakdown kind of thing rather than as my main tone. I was thinking of either picking up a less noisy Devi, boosting my existing pedals/amp models with something like a Boss SD-1, or something different altogether. Too many dirt boxes are trying to emulate amp sounds I think, and that's not where their strength is.

What I like about the Aenima is that it's not just a Fuzz, you can use it as a straight up distortion, to the left it's more overdrivey and to the rigth it's more fuzzy, around the middle on the bridge pickup you get a real sweet spot. I wouldn't mind another pedal kinda like that.

I'm not looking to spend an awful lot though as I'm on a budget at the moment. I just like to have as many dirt options as possible for different songs, but I'm still looking for that one primary tone. I'm also open to the idea of other effects pedals that I can leave on a lot rather than just for the occasional bit where I want a flanger sweep, I still don't have any kind of auto/synth wah effect, a Vibrato/Chorus, stuff like that.

I use a Tele copy into an Ad30VT.

Maybe a TP if you want something somewhat like the Aenima. But they only place to find one (until may that is  ) is in a Shoegazer which is a little expensive.

Isn't the Aenima based off the TP circuit?

Yeah, the aenima is more noisey to my ears, the TP is also in the white spider just to be clear.

I think if you really want to counter the Aenima, I'd get the 33. They play well together yet are totally different pedals. The 33 is gated, more tame, and has a nice well rounded fuzz-tone. My first devi combo I used a lot was Aenima>33. Sounded great on a lot of settings. :thumb:

I kinda like how the Bit sounds used as a distortion actually... I wouldn't mind maybe something with an upper octave though. A GZ might be nice since it's more tame.

The Shoegazer has the ability to do upper octave tonez and the Aenima is based off the TP.

I love my Hyperion and my Shoegazer. The Shoeg is noisier, but only by a whisper. The Torn's Peaker side is a really thick, smooth, ass-kicking fuzz that borders on "distortion." With the SM circuit added, it's otherworldly but noisy as fuck!

For my main dirt sound right now, I'm using the Hyperion. It's small, simple, and gated (=quiet) so well you don't notice it opening and closing. It works REALLY well for upper octave lead stuff as well. You get a cool scrambled texture with the control knob turned up. If you don't want it, it all but disappears below about 12:00. You don't lose any gain to speak of either in turning the control knob down. Overall, it's a big, ballsy sound that's just over the top enough. So far, my fav Devi. There's a used one on Ebay right now going for about $50.

It's the reverse of the spectacular aenima. I had it set up with the aenima at a noisey overdrive (texture rolled down) and kicked on the 33 to make it sound huge.

I was going to recommend the Hype as well. It's super diverse.

The SG would be good for everything in one. It has a fuckload more gain than the Hype with both circuits on, but it kinda reminded me of Hype...with just a fuckload more gain, and more knobs to get a broader range out of--from cruchy octave ups to stacked Big Muffs. And the Aenima is based on the TP, but from what I've experienced with both, the TP is a lot less smoother to my ears.

Also check out the Cherry Pop. It definitely deserves a lot more love than it gets around here. It's basically an SM with a MUCH bigger tone range. If I could just have one single circuit fuzz for everything it would be the Cherry Pop. Plus CP into the Aenima is fucking awesome.

Yeah Cherry Pops kick ass! And there's so much tonal range: bad ass razor fuzz, fat blister fuzz, gainy distortion-esque fuzz, glitchy 8-bit fuzz. Tons and tons of fun!

Hmmm, I should make a demo, there doesn't seem to be many good CP demonstrations out there...

I already have a Big Muff though :P The Hyperion is meant to be kinda similar isn't it? I do love how the pedal looks though.

Where is this Hyperion on ebay? All of the ones on ebay are like $117 :wha?: *cough*ripoff*cough*
As for a versatile yet very unique dirt pedal might I suggest the Turbo RAT?

Only on lower texture settings, the hyperion will be way more scrambled than a big muff once you go past 9'oclock on the texture.
