Bass Fuzz/ Distortion/ Overdrive?????

Post by Phengren Oswald »

So since EQD has scored big time with me twice, I figured I see if they make a fuzz or boost or
what-have-you that works well with bass.
I'm currently using the classic Boss Bass Distortion on a Fender Jazz and even with the gain set
reasonably low and the eq in the middle, it sounds a little high-mid range-y digital for my liking.

I'm playing in noisy hardcore type band, bass is pretty fast but I want something
a little bit more, uh, unique sounding....

Anyone try the White Light on bass?

Suggestions?

The Monarch is great on bass. I wasn't 100% sure about it before buying one because there are no bass demos, but it works magnificently. The treble/bass controls are very usable, you can add the grindy/clanky/what have you or dial it back some, and when set to noon there's already no loss of low end...even if you crank the bass control it doesn't get boomy. I love it. I think it would be great when run at 18v as well.

It's not a straight out fuzz but it gets fuzzy as you increase the drive. I typically use it with the drive around 9 o clock and the EQ controls facing away from each other.

I've been using a Hoof for a while and it's my favorite Muff-type fuzz on bass. Real clean, THICK sound, loud as hell, can get as dark and fat or harsh and cutting as you want (for a Muff type fuzz anyway).

There is very little low-end loss with my 18V active preamp.....even on the low B string. I think more bassists should try the Hoof.....it's badass!

Off the top of my head, the Monarch and Hoof would be my first bet.

Perhaps the Monarch is worth exploring.
Looking for more of an overdrive than all out fuzz.....

+1
I actually liked it on bass better than guitar (with my setups).

I still think for bass grit nothing beats a Sans amp DI. Plus its versatile for recording and eliminates the need for cabs on stage as all DI boxes do. However as for as EQD the monarch would be the best bet

Actually picked up a Monarch a few weeks ago and yes, it's fitting the bill quite nicely. It takes a little
time to get it adjusted just right but I think I'm pretty happy. Keeping the gain relatively low is working for
my set-up.

I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet, but I have a feeling the Dirt Transmitter would rule on bass.

EQD is main stay on my board will will be forever.

That said both the monarch and the hoof are excellent for the bass, sadly was not a fan of the tone reaper.

The Zap is awesome on bass for a more OD-type sound (but still fuzzy). With that bass knob, you can actually ADD low end when you engage it.

If you're into another no-longer-available pedal, the Shank is a nice buzzy fuzz on bass. Lots of low end (as long as you don't tighten up the timbre too much) and a sort-of gated feel to it. Gets pretty heavy too.
