um... right :poke:

i have to say i love almost every album in it's own way :) i don't mind the change at all... Ghost Reveries was also drastically different - mainly because it's whole in open D minor tuning (THAT'S A COOL APPROACH), basically every album was different

ps: you don't see people bitching about Damnation, but this one is a problem? what?

Saw Opeth last night and got to say I was severely disappointed. Everything they played was really fucking light, no screaming, barely any head banging. Pretty watered down metal show. I was actually kind of pissed. I've been wanting to see Opeth for so long. Have their live records/videos and they fucking slay! Saw them myself and I don't know what the fuck happened. Mikael kept saying "we've never played this live, but were going to try it out tonight". So it made me feel like Kansas City was their guinea pig city. They played all their soft songs. At one point Mikael busted out and acoustic and sat down on the edge of the stage. At that point I was like "I'm fucking out". No Bleak or anything cool from Blackwater Park, no god damn songs from Still Live or any other early albums, No Heir Apparent...fuck! Only shit from every album where Mikael didn't have to stretch his voice. At first I thought maybe he was just trying to give his vocal chords a chance to warm up, but after an hour and a half an NO heavy shit, I was fucking through. I left early, pissed and not sure about Opeth anymore, at least live. This happens sometimes when you see live bands though. I have been disappointed by the best of them for their shit watered down performances on stage.

Every city was like that. It was an awesome show though. Although if you haven't seen them live before I can understand how you would be disappointed. This was my 5th time seeing them, so I'd seen all the other stuff several times over before. This whole tour was announced as a rock tour, not a metal tour. They've said they may or may not be going back to metal next time around so we'll see what happens.

See I didn't know that at all. So annoying to me. I just don't understand how all these bands go from super heavy to mellow.

Well, it is their 10th album. 8 of which were metal oriented. They've been doing it a while. They wanted to do something totally different. I get it. But, I'm hoping they release the original Heritage tracks as an ep or something. When Mikael first started working on the album he wrote several songs in the style of Blackwater Park, but they decided to scrap them in favor of a 70's style progressive hard rock theme. So maybe we'll be seeing that come out.

I liked Damnation more than Heritage but Heritage is still slowly growing on me. I'm glad they can switch up styles and remain creative but my favorite album will always be Watershed I think (Burden is one of my favorite songs).

It doesn't really have anything to do with how heavy the songs are, just personal taste I guess :idk:

I don't really like Heritage at all. The songs seem too soft for me. Damnation was still pretty fucking heavy. This album to feels like a sell out move. I still respect and love Opeth, but fuck me man. Still Live is my favorite album of theirs, followed by Watershed, followed by Blackwater Park. Actually I love all of their albums and own all of them as well. Heritage pisses me off a little though.

Damnation is one of my favorite cd's, so nothing they make will top that for me.

Sell out move? really?

Who are they trying to sell out to exactly? i literally DON'T know any people that would be really appealed by this kind of sound. Or at least not more than with their older sound... to me it seems like they've gone more underground than before

i'm not offended or anything, just discussing :)

To become more commercialized, get more radio play, achieve new fans...etc. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It's just that it seems they're abandoning their roots and going with what's trendy and popular now. I like Opeth because they have a unique sound. Heritage on the other hand doesn't have that IMO. It sounds pretty fucking interchangeable with other groups out there. They kept using the word "obscure" during their concert. That they were going to play a more "obscure" tune. What they actually played was kind of crappy and not obscure at all IMO. I don't know. I'm just annoyed by the whole thing. It sucks when you wait and wait and wait to see a band you fucking love in concert, and it turns out to be not what you were expecting at all. Same thing happened when I saw A Perfect Circle live. Those guys SUCK live, boring as shit performance. I want to be fucking entertained! ENTERTAIN ME goddamnit.

APC is bad live?

MY LIFE = SHATTERED

anyway i see what you mean... but it still feels to me more underground thansome of the previous ones. I mean - some of the previous singles were far more pop-oriented than Devil's Orchard (IMHO). But yeah... i can see how an Opeth fan can be surprised and cinfused

No Way. I saw APC live and they were good.

Although it depends what you mean. They sounded great which is all I care about. I don't care at all about stage show. To me stage show is for people that suck because they have to do things to keep people entertained.

Haters gonna hate, I hated watershed. Heritage though is creeping it's way to my AOTY list. On a related note, am I the only one who plays castelvania while listening to old opeth? It fits the mood so perfect.

yeah it's all about ones expectations... i also don't care about mean stage presence and shoving your dick into my face during superbrutal synchronized breakdowns

watershed has it's strong and weak points, for sure... but haters are indeed gonna hate :)

it's certainly better than the shift Pain of Salvation have done lately.. bleugh

I'm somewhere between digging it and being over the band. Some parts are pretty lame, but it still sounds like Opeth, musically, just with some new elements (still utilized with their usual melodic bent) and less some old ones.

EDIT: Heh, there's a riff at 4:45 in the third song that part of totally sounds like the riff in the end of one of our tunes. The opening to the fourth song has gotten less gay with every repetition. But it was pretty gay at first.
I play.
