I get into such long arguments where I get worked up into a rant about things like genre and subgenre classification. Which maybe like 5 people in the world care about.

METALCORE AND METALLIC HARDCORE ARE NOT THE SAME THING

my friend Dan and i are like that...we can have extended colloquys on, e.g., what "psychedelic music" is. a memorable quote of his: "fucking Echo and the Bunnymen are NOT psychedelic. 'House at Pooneil Corners' by the Jefferson Airplane is psychedelic." we're like two characters from High Fidelity; he actually worked in record stores for years.

Lol. Just started reading that book. That and Freakonomics. Going back and forth between the two.

Genre related arguments make me so angry. I'm a very specific person, and then someone makes some broad sweeping statement like "All metal is fast. That's what metal is." and I'm like   :shoot:

i'm literally the kind of music nerd who can not only tell the story of their life by playing one record or song after another, but also has enough anecdotes and factoids about the artist in question to make even the curious scream "will you SHUT UP and let me listen to the MUSIC?"

 Same here pretty much. I have the unfortunate habit of also doing this around people that have next to zero interest in music. Also, I compulsively try to diversify people's musical tastes. Whatever they listen to I have to try to get them into music that is completely different.

i used to do that. i gave up, because it made people not like me. sometimes the price of having friends is putting up with listening to Los Lonely Boys.

You know, the older I get, the less I enjoy Cusak's character in High Fidelity

well, we're nicer than that. and the Bunnymen comment, to be fair, *was* from the 80s. but i'm always delighted to find out that we've independently come to the same conclusions about stuff for the same reasons, e.g. we both love Steve Reich but hate Philip Glass because we find Glass emotionless and over-thought. and it's even nicer when i can lay something on him he DOESN'T know because it's the kind of thing that didn't go through used-vinyl stores in the US, e.g. mega-obscure dub or Gavin Bryars stuff.

This kid on another forum wrote "boo to the gay marine in the army and boo to the law that enabled "him" to enlist"

Seriously? and he really put quotes around 'him' in his sentence.

Things like that make me want to kill people
So this turned into another devi thread...

Holy shit dude, I know. Jesus. How can people be so ignorant? The Marine Corps is a totally separate branch.

I wasn't really commenting on that. I just rewatched H.F. recently and found myself thinking about it a whole lot differently than the first time I saw it.

the major thing lost in the translation from book to film was that that guy wasn't supposed to be all that sympathetic of a character. the film made him into a sort of hipster Belushi figure. surprise! the film adaptation of a book fucked it up! didn't see THAT coming.
