Would like some info on wahs

Post by DarkAxel »

allright here's what i've had so far:

Dunlop CB Mister
Dunlop CB 95
Dunlop CB 95Q (have it right now)
Morley Power Wah/Volume

my friend lendd me his Ibanez Weeping Demon and while being a repulsive piece of a japanese batle robot, soundwise it's quite superior to any CB i've had so far. No top end shrill, it actually wahs with distortion...

but the low frequency sweep is kinda unnatural to me and i haven't been able to tweak it better...

so what would you guys recommend me for a wah? my requirements:

No top end shrill so i can use it for cleans with telecaster
nice moist sound for funk
good with dirt (before dirt mind you)
ideally spring loaded and auto-engaging - not a must-have though
well priced
available in europe
At least some tweakability - what if

any recommendations?

i'm not against buying a used wah or even a vintage piece :)

I had Dunlops and Morleys, then tried a Budda wah - blew my mind! Got all those requirements except the spring loaded thing. It's just an ordinary wah... But total quality sound. I've not tried recent stuff like that tiny Plutoneium Chi-wahwah though... Deeply cute...

I just got a Vox V847. Way better than my Dunlop. It doesn't have that top end shrill you're talking about. A much more natural sound.

but like I said, I JUST got it and still need to play with it some more.

I'm normally not really a fan/sucker of/for signature pedals but I have to say that this is one of the few expectations:

Sounds great... I like the vox wahs more in general but this one just stands out to me... :thumb:

I just bought a Gig-FX mega wah, it sounds great. it's much fatter than the crybaby, and none of the top end shrill. I put it before a fuzzhugger algal bloom and it sounds awesome. definitely the best wah i've played

I'd consider them but they're kinda expensive as is plus 20% import tax from outside EU... that's why i need something available in europe ;)

Might look into those Voxes, thanks... I'll also check Gig-FX if they're available somewhere in EU

thanks so far, guys :thumb:

without moving into the realm of boutique wahs, the Vox wahs are really pretty good. to get a wah that's REALLY good with dirt, though, you need the fuzz-friendly buffer, and there are no really inexpensive wahs with the buffer.

if you decide to spend $$ and splash out for something top-of-the-line, go Wilson or Teese. if you can find a used RMC2 or something, you're in BUSINESS.

hot damn those GIG-FX wahs are priced quite reasonably! :) thanks, might look into them some more

any GIG-FX users here? Would you recommend saving up for Mega MKII or is Kilowah awesome enough? Or the Frampton piece?

My guitar player got a Wilson, and I have to say that it's the most amazing wah I've heard in person. Fr serious. He and I had been on a gear search for a while, trying out various wahs, and absolutely nothing else measured up. They may be expensive, but they're worth it. I believe he got the Freaker Wah (will have to check on that, though) and it has the widest, deepest sweep I've ever heard on a guitar wah.

Yup, that's the Tychobrahe Parapedal sound. It's pretty deep.

Those Dunlops are all crap.
The Vox V847 isn't much different and I haven't tried the newer ones either, but they're essentially the same thing are they not?
In Europe, you should be able to find an old Italian wah -- A Jen or a Vox.
Failing that, contact Stuart Castledine in the UK and he'll sort you out.
You won't have to pay the duty for a US made RMC or Wilson.

Or you could get a drop-in kit for your CB shell. BYOC, Wilson, Area51 ...

While some of you touched on that... what about those RMCs?

especially RMC1 - i can see it's on sale in one shop here in czech republic... the only one that offers them...

RMC1 is the dog's bollocks. I still have a Wilson wah, but the RMC2 is what's on my board right now.
RMC1 is a straight-forward wah that's pre-tuned, but I'm sure it sounds great. RMC2 has more controls, but you can't make it sound bad.

the thing is RMC2 costs A LOT compared to the RMC1 on sale...

RMC2 currently costs 282€
RMC1 on sale costs 179€

but if it's not worth it then i should forget it...

Dev, that SC wahs are pretty nice, but really too expensive, thanks anyway... drop-in kits could work for me, butt here are still those duties

frankly - buying a GIG-FX Frampton model is probably the easiest and least expensive option suggested. But i'd like to hear more about that RMC1 if anyone can help me
