Or anything that I've listened to a million times. If I don't know the songs really well music can just be distracting.

Also, I find that I really like studying to Electric Wizard. :idk:

I've listened to Option Paralysis, A Natural Death, Satan Worshiping Doom, Hate Ashbury, and Wonderful Rainbow so many times that they are my perfect studying music.

Definitely Mogwai, I lean towards Happy Songs For Happy People.

Also, depending on how chill you want, Massive Attack is fantastic.

not that I'd listened to particularly mellow or soothing music when reading

Masada string quartet
Dead Can Dance
Current 93
Raison d'Etre
Sephiroth (the dark ambient band)
Endura
Tangerine Dream

If You don't feel embarrassed for sleeping with audio tapes on - in hopes something sinks in - and such practices:

try associating albums You never heard before to particular books. Try using bands that actually play songs, instead of the ambient ones I suggested. When You can't quite remember a thing You still recall reading about, try relaxing and bringing the music up You were listening to while reading, if You can remember they associated. I know it sounds like wishy-washy 70's hypnotherapy but, You know, for some it works :idk:

for this I tried using Dimmu Borgir and Arch Enemy. Can't say it would have made miracles but I'm not rebutting it altogether.

Doesn't cost a thing to try unless You are stupid enough to buy a such course from a sly new age sales man.

Most of that "post rock" type stuff fits pretty well for that for me.

Maserati
God is an Astronaut
Pelican
Like someone else said, Red Sparowes
Maybeshewill
And So I Watch You From Afar

Those are some of the bands that have been played a lot on my studying playlist lately.

Lotus Eaters, Ginnungagap, Bastard Noise's 'rogue astronaut', Imaginary Softwoods, Locrian and the J Mascis solo record are all getting regular playing when I'm doing drawing stuff.
