Pedalboard for Thou / Salome type sound?

Post by jfrey »

What do you recommend as a setup for something like these bands? I've been trying out a bunch of things and I just can't quite get that sound.

Saw Thou a few weeks ago with PG.99 and CTTS, i loved their tone so i asked Allen? or Adam? (i can't remember his name but he had the shorter dark bushy hair, he was stage left and played the lead parts) what he was using..... Gibby LP standard on the neck pickup into tu-2 into a danelectro delay straight into an old 5150 (he was using borrowed mesa cabs not sure what he usually uses) For such a minimal setup it was THICK tone..... the rythmn guitarist was using a gibby faded V straight into a 5150 also.

i just double checked some live pics and they use what i described in the first post and the cabs look like marshall's or old peavey's. So for a pedal board sound i have no idea what to recommend all i can recommend is buying a 5150 and a les paul..... btw they were really cool dudes that sat and talked to me for like 15 minutes and their singer is fawkin awesome, he took blakes place in pg.99 for the show and was absolutely amazing.

or cheaper than a 5150, find a Peavey VTM 60 or 120. it's the modded JCM800 sound.
Maybe partying will help.

5150's are all ready pretty cheap and easy to find for like 400-500$, bought mine for 500 recently retubed with all JJ tubes, it was a wicked amp but not for what i do so i sold it to a good friend of mine who now uses it as a slave for a mesa triple rec.

All three of those amps are great amps from back when peavey was top notch, and notably they take pedal's alot better than a 5150 does due to the lack of a real clean channel. The 5150 does one thing and does it well, and that's hi-gain distortion, the vtm series and butcher were more versatile to me but if the OP is looking for that certain sound that's what he should go with.

If I remember right Thou tunes to like F#, that would be a huge part of the sound.

Yeah it's all about the ridiculous down tuning and neck pickup I reckon.

Dude, Thou opened for WITTR at Black Metal Woodstock a couple weeks ago.

Any el cheapo marshall clone with the gain jacked (think the general Grief sound, just tuned lower) will get you well within the same zip code.

The curious thing about Thou is that the let the P.A. do all the heavy lifiting as far as volume goes. I was able to stand stage right their whole show and it didn't even aggravate my tinnitus. They're able to let the amps do a lot of sculpting without having to deal with pushing power tubes to alter the sound.
good deals are here.

Wow, heavy!

it kinda reminds of Kelly's sound in Neurosis - he uses cranked JCM800 i think? Plus massive downtuning... voilá? So some hot-rod JCM800 variation should do this sound

although, i might be completely wrong and you may hate me now :idk:
