Re: Boss HM-2
I dig it (actually its in the chain right now; at the end (of the gain portion) cuz of the buffer).
Good for SHOEGAZE, NOISE, and CHEAP PUNK.

Reviving this thread because I've had one for about a month now and I love it. Crank the lows, adjust hi's to taste and instant slutty industrial fuzz. Great setting to stack with other fuzzes to see how they react. Usually end up sounding like my amp is exploding from thunder noises.
That is all. Carry on.

That's a weird use for an HM-2 -- the way it clips is weird -- sideways as well as top and tails. The Distortion knob does nothing at all for most of its travel.Wes Mantooth wrote:After doing more research I found many metal bands in the 90's used this as a boost for an already distorted amp
So it could be a cool boost as well
I keep buying em out of nostalgia and then getting rid of them again.
Steve Hackett used one too BTW, as did Eric Clapton

Re: Boss HM-2
I´ve been using mine to play crust-punk on bass for ages, it rules!
Ist awesome for the deathmetal sound but the bypass signal sucks ass and makes every other pedal on the board suffer really hard. i was thinking about getting a tb loop to put it in but ditched that idea when i got some other dritbox.
But its a fuzz dist box for sure.

Re: Boss HM-2
I used to have one and really miss it. The key to getting the shoegazy tones from the HM2 is to turn the gain all the way down and adjust the mids to taste with healthy bass. This give it a "sometimes" tone.
I lost mine, or stolen and have never been able to pull the trigger on another one given the prices. I just got an MT-2 (for 20 bucks) which I can do the same thing, roll back the gain knob and I'm there. I find a lot of those metal pedals are great for shoegaze if you tweak them correctly, which is usually in the opposite direction in which they were intended. Take the gain down and you get some great tones.

Your argument is invalid. All fuzz sounds better with another fuzz (boost, od, reverb, chorus, etc.).

Yeah, that's true.
The HM-2 just has this thing about it where I cannot stand it alone but it's good with other things. It's great for noise and stuff. Also useful as an EQ of sorts when slapped by a feedback loop.

The "Eric Clapton used it..." list is a lot of fun and potentially deadly.

Re: Boss HM-2
I love my HM-2. It's an ugly sound - in a good way, but its really amp dependant if you actually want to play metal on it, I don't usually, sometimes I like to occasionally like to play some drop a funeral doom on it.
It has its flaws and benefits, It sounds fuzzier and overall better (to my ears) than my Russian Big Muff. The gain doesn't need to past 12 and the HI knob only needs to be around 3 at the most. Otherwise it'll have a disgusting shrill sound

Re: Boss HM-2
For HM-2 on crack, chanel switching, with parametric EQ (as well as every other Boss analog distortion of the era), find yourself a Boss GL-100.
MIJ, cheap, and the unsung hero of the line of that era if you can stand rack stuff.

Thanks for the tip, looking for a GL-100 now.
