Just to handle the Treble Booster V Tone control thing:

Treble boosters are literally booster with pre-set tone controls on them. Usually it's just a small input/output capacitor. It literally just rolls off low frequencies.

With a dirty amp, sometimes if you use a darker or even a full-range booster to get more distortion, it gets really muddy. Losing the low-end from the signal before the amp prevents that, and it won't sound thin or harsh because the distortion is compressing the signal-- so what's left of the bass is brought up, and the treble is clipped more.

It's not so much that it boosts specific frequencies as after a certain point, the lower frequencies are progressively rolled off. If you wanted to boost specific frequencies, you'd want a graphic EQ or similar.

The effect will be greater with darker guitars, of course, as they have more low frequencies to roll off.

Thanks for all the help guys! I think y'all sold me on treble boosters now :thumb: Seems like they can definitely get me something different than the dirty boost my DOD250 gives or the treble on my OD pedal.

I think i'll pull the trigger on Analogman's Beano Boost.

Cheers!

DOD 250 is the world's best mid scooping OD. A treble boost is a horse of a different color.

How so? It's got very little tone shaping at all.

It's definitely got a mid scoop to it--it disappears very easily in the mix if you're using it on bass (which, I assume would put the mid scoop in what guitarists consider the low mids).

I've seen it suggested that part of the magic of the Rangemaster (and similar circuits) is the very low impedance of the input that loads the pickup/instrument cable combo and rolls back some of the highs that would sound harsh with the extra gain into an already cooking amp. To my ears the sound of an already overdriven amp hit with a Rangemaster-style treble booster is very upper-mid rich. Agree that options to boost other frequencies or further attenuate high frequencies can be welcome for many uses. Now it's been such a long time, I think I should be going....

It's not so much mid scooped as bass shy and treble/harmonics boosted.
For sure it's not the pedal to use on bass though, so either way = no go on bass
or a bold midrange cutting tone. It's not cutting mids in and of itself though...
Just the wrong pedal for what you're using it for and or a "treble" booster.
(Not meant to sound like a dick if it comes off as such) :)

Oh dude, it sounds fucking awesome on bass (check out OM's discography for some excellent 250-abuse). You just gotta caress it right. (i.e. play super fucking loud).

But yeah, definitely not a traditional treble booster.
