So I'm new here, and new to the message board thing. Figured this would be as good a place as any to start (aside from the "introduce yourself" thread, but that seemed sooo cliche). I actually started out on the contest page, but I felt like a jerk posting there and just leaving it at that. I'm not much of a guitar player, but I guess listening to these guys (and gal) got me going more than anything.

Steven Stapleton
Fred Frith
Michael Rother
Bill Orcutt
Cosey Fanni Tutti
Fred McDowell
Muddy Waters

Actually, with the blues guys, I'd make tapes of their records, play some version of slide guitar and feedback over them, and tape it on a beat up two track recorder. I guess that means they influenced me. I guess I oughta add my buddy Roger to the list. He's a monster player. I asked him to give me lessons, teach me some chords and whatnot, and he said, "Make 'em up yourself. You'll have a lot more fun."

on guitar, Spacemen 3 creeps into everything I do.
the stuff I'm making lately, I'm shooting for one part Neil Young, two parts White Light-era Lou Reed,
but then I also have been ripping off guitar bits from Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou for a couple of years.

bass is where I've decided to let my Tony Iommi riff-whore side come out now.
I love playing that shit on guitar, but just haven't been able to put together an appropriate band for it.
lots more options and avenues for heavy riffage playing bass.
Maybe partying will help.

In no particular order...
David Gilmour, Roger Waters,- pink floyd, none of that bullshit solo crap
Fuck it, all of pink floyd ALL OF THEM!
Adam Jones - tool
Bush. I shit you not. Whatevs.
Sunn 0)))
Dylan Carlson - Earth
The Edge. Also influenced me to pay off city councils and start my enviornmentally disastrous luxury home neighborhood.
Neil (motherfucking) Young - Specifically the kick ass electric shit-storm neil young.
Nine Inch Nails

I could do a list of about 800 bands/singersongwriters who have influenced me in a negative way. But the main lesson they have taught me is: RUN THE FUCK AWAY FROM THAT ACOUSTIC GUITAR.

me and my friend used to make chuck-norris-isms for neil young like:

when Neil Young solos, he is temporarily possessed by the ghost of a dinosaur

Banshees are actually the wails of Neil's guitar the last time he was in Scotland. they echoed backwards in time.

Neil Young doesn't write sad songs. he peers into the black pit of your soul, and tells you what is there.

Neil Young doesn't get older, he just gets realer.

Neil Young doesn't use distortion. his fingers are just that full of the dirt of the ages

etc. etc.
,':{I> ... your move, Trebek.

my music for you to put in your earholes :joy:

Here here! (or is it Hear Hear?)

Ooooh, I forgot about Franz Ferdinand. Their one of those bands I was listening to when I started really getting into music/playing guitar so a lot of their influence just naturally made it's way into the inner workings of my musical mind.

Nope, not me. I checked out some of their stuff, though, and it sounds damn good. The doomier (is doomier a word?) reminds me of the early Warhorse stuff when they had a female singer. I ganked my name from an old Philip K Dick book, which is what I assume they did since it's not really a word.

I'd say mainly, the rhythm sections of Fugazi and Can.
Krautrock movement, Punk and Hardcore movements, Dub movement, Psychedelic movement, Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Juan Alderete, Jaco Pastorius, Battles, Venetian Snares, King Crimson, John Lennon (and the Beatles in general, but Lennon above all), Bob Dylan, Brian Cook, David Wm Sims, Cliff Burton, Greg Ginn, Syd Barrett... many more but I'll leave it at this.

David Lynch movies, Federico Fellini movies, Stanley Kubrick movies, I suppose Ennio Morricone...

and pedal builders.

When I started twenty-something years ago,

The B side of Iron Butterfly's "Inagaddadavida" that I got on vinyl for free in a pile of other somewhat less terrible albums. This is why I bought a guitar and started a band. I figured I could not possibly do any worse than that steaming pile of shit. Flowers and beads my ass.

East Bay Ray, Dead Kennedys. Why I bought my first Echoplex too.

Jorma Kaukonen (electric), also why I bought my first fuzz pedals trying to get the Ampeg Scrambler sound in vain. I found neat stuff instead.

Michael Karoli, Can. Another "it can't be that hard" inspiration, what little did I know.

Tom G. Warrior, Celtic Frost. I didn't want to be in a metal band but I sure as hell wanted to be that mean.

That's the ones that I remember today, I mostly did it for me, but a few guitarists still turn my head from time to time.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.
