Finding Musicians With Similiar Taste

Post by NihilistNixon »

It seems to be impossible. Im really struggling right now to find people who want to play music outside of generic metal and generic Black Keys type music. It is making me feel a tad crazy. Does anyone here have any tips for finding musicians for a music style that is somewhat hard to describe? I have all these songs almost complete and no one to create them with.

My best friend is the only person I know that I have so much in common with musically. And I met him while working in a grocery store.

I have no idea. I guess...just go to some local shows?
I don't know where you live, but sites like craigslist or reverbnation could point you towards some interesting musicians :idk:
It's really bleak around here. I'm lucky to have met him.

All the local bands here are not my style, although i wish they were. I live in bleak Indiana.lol Im hoping I run into a girl who can sing and play guitar and share my musical preference. But I know that is more unrealistic than the boogeyman coming out from under my bed and giving me tons of gifts.

I can only say there isn't much music I don't like. I'm more critical of insincerity than the genre. Been listening to a lot of Explosions, Mister Heavenly, Michael Yonkers, Black Angels, Gridlock, Bassnectar, Delta 9, and PinkShineyUltraBlast lately. that's been in or around the playlist at the moment.

When you figure it out, let me know. I've been playing the Craigslist game for nearly a year and haven't found much as far as results.

EDIT: Actually, I take that back. I've got 3 or 4 possibilities right now, but I don't know if any of them will turn into anything productive.

I think I just need to start going to/playing shows again. I found a band once this way. A bunch of guys were looking for a singer, and they dug my shit. So they asked if I wanted a backing band. It worked out for a bit. Sometimes playing outside your comfort zone in a different style of music is better overall than sitting home alone. You get to learn different techniques, expose yourself to different progressions, and if nothing else, more practice.

I say throw yourself into a scene.

I write very...uh...cryptic lyrics(?). Its very hard to put in words, if I had a better computer I would upload demos and post them, they are already on a CD. I enjoy instrumentals in songs and have gotten decent at making a very dark-atmospheric sound with my trusty Washburn. I listen to alot of newer Brand New (the Devil and God to Daisy) and have always been a fan of Deftones. Both the bands have a very exact style and write amazing lyrics, very personal. And what no one ever believes is Im a huge Tegan and Sara fan, their lyrics and sound is also very exact. I also listen to the obvious isntrumental bands Explosions in the Sky and Set Fire to Flames. Idk, its weird even typing about this kind of stuff for me.lol

Really I listen to the Silent Hill 3 and Silent Hill 4 soundtracks more than any actual bands.

So weird to see Explosions in the sky name-dropped instead of Mogwai.

Aside from that, find some more friends, and start a band with them.

Alternatively, you can become your own best friend and start a recording-only project.

Why is that? I feel like Explosions are pretty popular.
