I play by myself - psychedlic, Syd Barrett-like folk (not limited to that, though)... A guitar, some effects, some vocals. So I don't need a huge amp to play along with a full band or anything, just something of fairly good quality for my modest needs.
What I am looking for:

☯ Needs to sound good when Mic'ed up live and when recording with mic
Otherwise, just go around to local guitar shops and try stuff out. Every now and then you'll stumble upon some kind of great find in the used department.

so many good answers, thank you. now I have some names to look for when checking out the used markets which was exactly my plan. except I live in Denmark, so prices will be little higher than US.
the Vox Ac15CC is definitely worth it because it works for that, and it pretty much works fine up on unto mid-size venues, so its kind of like the only amp you'll need i foyu like the sound.
