Thinking of shrinking my pedal board down again

Post by Instant Dan »

When I think about it, most of the time I really only use a fuzz or dist. pedal along with my deluxe memory man. Not playing in a band anytime soon due to work and other committments. Did anyone feel good when they did it?

I felt better about shrinking my board down when I was in a band actually. Nice to simplify live, for me at least. When I'm not in a band, I run everything I can fit on my boards so I don't have to waste time switching shit out constantly.

But yeah, simple is good. Sometimes I'm bent over turning knobs more than I'm playing, WTF?

Yeah I always feel great after downgrading. Down to 4 pedals right now.

I feel the same way too but there is something awesome of having a shit ton of pedals at your disposal.

I end up worrying more about switching effects and tweaking parameters than actually playing guitar, so keeping a minimal board for me makes sense. And I hate lugging all that shit to gigs.

That sounds dirty...

I downsized my rig, its down to a tuner, a Baby Thundaa and a Carbon Copy. All of my other pedals are with my parents, and I don't feel restricted at all...
So this turned into another devi thread...

Agreed! I'll never truly scale back.

Yeah, that's pretty bad looking back over it.

Not that liberating IMO. The concern is that almost all guitarists will downsize to an overdrive/distortion/fuzz and a delay, and that gets a bit samey.

True, though.. I've had moments playing live when having a lot of pedals can get in the way of actually playing the instrument.

Sucks not being able to play in a band.

I shrunk down to one 20"x15" case (instead of two) and am more than pleased, especially now that I actually have people to jam with. First time I showed up with two boards that size and I had to roll my eyes at myself. Biggest hassle besides floorspace is finding where the disconnect is when no sound is going through: Patch cables? One spot with 5 connectors? Who knows. But I got what I need with 3 fuzzes, digi delay, Freeze, QTron and the vast landscape of the M9. I'm set for awhile at least.

I'm eternally torn between my love for fuzz/filters/delays and my greater life's desire to not be hassled at all by anything ever.

I've lived this nightmare on stage more than once during some of the more packed shows my old band ever played. Almost sends me into panic mode trying to diagnose that shit under those circumstances. Fuck George L's is what I learned over the years.

It's actually a good I dea for two reasons.
1. If you only use a few pedals then you don't need to have 20 at your disposal (although that is nice)
2. That could be your travel board, which would be cool

I like having a big board since I don't play live, I just like having a ton of different options to vary up songs.

To me there's something oddly appealing about smaller boards,
not to say huge ones don't impress me a lot of the time

After buying, selling trading for 2 years I realized that the only effects I even like the sound of is Fuzz and Delay (include OD and reverb in that)
I find all modulation to sound pretty cheesy.

So these days my board is just a 2 fuzzes, a delay, then my "utility" pedals - my comp and pre amp
