cans!
i'm looking for a nice set of headphones. preferably sub-$200, so i don't have to sell off fuzz.
i've been looking at the grado sr-60i, but i'd prefer something i can wear on a train and not piss everyone off. nobody likes that asshole.
any suggestions? flat response is always nice, but these are more for enjoyment than anything so i don't mind a little color - as long as it's musical, natch.

Re: cans!
I have the Audio Technica ATH-M40fs. They are very nice, and sound great.
I wear them for extended periods of 3+ hours at least once a week, and they are comfortable.
They are also apparently serviceable, which is good, since my ear pads are starting to wear out after 2+ years of use.
Check them out.

I got these a couple weeks ago. They have a pretty flat response, seem to have pretty good dynamics and cancel sound out pretty well :http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000065BPB

I'm very happy with my Koss PortaPros. I've had them for years and have, at times, worn them for many hours at a time.

I have a set of Sennheiser HD280 Pros: http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-280 ... 000165FRQ/
I dig on them when I'm not using something in ear.

Re: cans!
I'm on Sony V-6's, which are almost the same as 7506. The foam around the ears will flake off the finish -- annoying as heck. There are replacement Sennheiser ear foams that fit and don't do this. The phones themselves are a bit too bright, but not bad.
I hear great things about the AT M50's. If I were buying closed cans, I'd get those.

I've had a pair of the sony v6's since middle school. The finish is completely gone, but the foam remains fine. They are pretty noisy these days.

Sony 7506. i've been using them or their cousins for twenty years for everything except DJing, for which i used those ungodly huge Paul Van Dyk things because they were so loud. and once you get home from your commute, you can mix on them, too.

Re: cans!
Yeah, if you want a "flat" response, studio headphones are the only way to go. Most of the consumer headphones (even the hi'ish-end ones like Bose and Sony), will boost certain frequencies to make what you're listening to sound more awesome. The majority of studio headphones are designed to more accurately reproduce what you are listening to.
I have a pair of AKG K240, and 2 pairs of Ultrasone HFI-550s. The Ultrasone are noise canceling, but will fatigue your ears quicker because of it. I feel like the AKGs are a little less flat though. I'd have to check the frequency response chart to be sure of it. Both are great moderately priced headphones.
